Mumsnet interior designers help me choose a rug and a light fitting

I think it really needs a rug. I want something a bit quirky/unusual. I love this, but waaay over budget for the size we need.

I am also struggling with a light fitting, I think i want something modern, maybe copper or brass coloured.

Any thoughts?

What colour/size/style are you looking for? Designers guild and Harlequin have similar floral rugs for a lot less. Also have a look at Cox and Cox and Rockett st George

it has to be at least 2m on the longest side. I want something to brighten up the grey a bit, but not too bright IYSWIM. I like the cox and cox tapestry floral rug, but it's a bit too white and bright.

something with a bit of yellow in might be nice. Doesnt necessarily have to be floral either.

What style is the rest of the house? In that room I'd do a faded Persian rug, something like this to give a bit of vintage interest, but it depends on your furnishings and the general style. There are lots of good-priced ones on Ebay.

Your door looks like it was meant to be painted and got forgotten, is that being done too?

Yes the door is going to be painted the same colour as the rest of the walls. The picture was taken at 11.23pm on Xmas eve after we had finished clearing all the painting stuff away after painting since 9am that morning without a break!! Haven't got round to finishing it off properly yet.

The fabric of the house is quite traditional, it's an 18th century georgian farmhouse, but I quite like a juxtaposition of modern furniture in an old house.

The sofa is going to be this once we can agree on the fabric!

I quite like faded overdyed persian rugs. The good ones can also be quite expensive though.

I have found that I hang on to any expensive rugs I have. I have several imported persian ones Anything cheap tends to get used in developments and then sold they just never look right. although having said that I bought a huge rug in argos for the place I have just done and it is very authentic looking and am keeping that. Its a scrolly oldy print like the very 1st one you linked faded

I have a similar thing to the minky version of the timorous beasties rug (about half the price from some obscure website around 10yrs ago). Really nice. Buggered if I can remember where it came from though.

It might be easier to find a light fitting first and work from that, there is so much choice of rugs, if you get the light it may help set the tone of the room if that makes sense.
Have you seen a fitting you like? The room looks lovely and has great bones.

I've seen loads of fittings I like. None within budget unfortunately.

Money no object I'd buy this, but it's just sloghtly over budget .

Budget is about £200 absolute max, preferably a lot less.

The IKEA Maskros is quite large and dramatic and it bit like the Artichoke fitting, if you don't mind it coming from IKEA...

Btw, do look at John Lewis for both rugs and lights, they have some surprisingly good choices for both though the designer lighting will come in over budget.
