Any ideas please what the problem could be, water ingress inside roof, down the side of the chimney in very bad weather today;the tiles look OK from the outside? Thanks

No, ours does it too.

Is it attached to the central heating ?

Ours did that cos the pipes that took the heated water from the fire to the rads sprang a leak.

It has happened during horizontal rain too.

It couldn't be a leaking pipe in the loft could it ?

Is the chimney set into the roof? If it is anything like ours, the flashing that lies under the tiles and is inset into the brickwork of the chimney, which acts as a gutter for the water that runs down the tiles has degenerated over time and is now no longer waterproof - you need to get that replaced by a roofer.

Thanks for the replies, can't see a leaking pipe so it looks like it might be the flashing. There is water dripping under one of the boards in the loft too though, which doesn't seem to be coming from the chimney leak or a pipe so a bit weird :/ Thanks again

lead flashing around the chimney. lead will probably have a hole in it. lead isn't cheap nowadays either...
