Oo merida - I'm 'watching' this thread as I have exactly the same problem! I am in 2 minds about my dining room - do I go for a 'red wine' colour carpet (hence hiding the inevitable spills Blush) or a nice creamy textured one with stainguard, but a bit - boring?

My friend got a 80% wool carpet about 10 years ago and it still looks great. I got a cheaper (not cheapest) one about 6 years ago that looks threadbare and needs replacing. So if you can afford it...

(I don't think stainguard stuff is much good after the first few months)

If you have yound kids/pets i would stick with a decent Polypropolyene carpet in heavy traffic areas for ease of cleaning.
Wool is warmer & nicer underfoot but harder to look after.
I also prefer carpets with a 'pile' (ie, like tufts) rather than loops (Berber) for the same reason.

We have 100% wool berber in all of our bedrooms/living rooms. The house is period and warmth and comfort was as important as style. We went for a cream one with darker flecks in it. It's been down a few years now and we haven't had any problems with it - hasn't needed cleaning yet either. Personally I dislike the feel of Polypropylene as it feels synthetic and looks cheap imo.

Don't go for loops if you have pets (claws pull up the loops). A blend of wool/polypropylene gives you something reasonably hardwearing but still nice.

during our building work, carpet moths got into the house so we switched to ALL synthetic
we have tufts in the bedroom and twist in the living rooms
even my snobby mother loves our carpets - and the fitting by the independent local firm who supplied was exemplary

I know next to nothing about carpets but our house has a looped one in the lounge and on the stairs and it is awful to vaccuum, I never feel it is done properly because bits of glitter, hair, sequins etc (small children not strange lifestyle) always seem to be stuck in it, have even seen a spider get stuck! hate it. was there when we moved in and when we can we will change it.

we've just ordered a wool loop one for our bedroom. its a grey/cream as we figure a bit darker will be more forgiving. no idea whether it will work out for us as it is our first foray into carpet buying!

We have an 80/20 in two bedrooms, twist pile in 'hazelnut' a sort of mid beigey brown.

Then a Berber on the stairs, I love the feel of this underfoot and it's very hard wearing and doesn't show marks.

And go for a good underlay - that makes a big difference to how the carpet looks and feels.

Thanks all. We're going for 50/50 wool mix (not keen on 100% pp) in Berber, a beige sort of colour....seems good value for money from the local carpet store/fitters.

Butting in...What type of carpet would be good on stairs and landing, bearing in mind the rest of the house (bedrooms inc.) is wooden floors?

We have a child and a dog, but the dog only rarely goes upstairs due to arthritis, unfortunately the child does!

You need to look at the individual carpets - they will normally tell you which room they are most suited to. A heavy-duty one for stairs, def!
