Painted vs sprayed MDF in living room, bedroom?

We're going to get some built-in shelves and cabinets in the living room, some other bookshelves, and some wardrobes done. We're trying to decide on sprayed vs painted. Is there a difference in terms of durability? Are most of the spray finishes very high-gloss or do they vary? Any experience of MDF sprayed vs (brush) painted? (by the way we aren't considering painting them ourselves, just comparing quotes from people who said they'd brush vs spray).
