Anyone in Buxton?

Have also posted this on the localtalk pages but I don't know how much traffic they get so hoping for some response here. I am thinking of moving to Buxton when we return to the UK in a few months - can anyone give me some advice / tips / opinions on the town? I will have an 18month old and a new baby, so will be keen to do toddler groups / family stuff. We don't drive and want to keep it that way - is the public transport halfway decent? Thanks for any tips! Weasel.

I know it a little, the area a bit north better! Where do you need to travel to? Train service to Manchester is good. Lots of toddler groups etc in the town. Do you want to move to Buxton itself or area around it?

There is an aldi and a morrisons in Buxton, plus a coop etc so you wouldn't need to drive as such. If you lived outside in a smaller village it would definitely help!

This facebook group is quite good.

Buxton is lovely but very cold and can get cut off in winter. There are lots of toddler groups, lovely park, great theatre, good swimming pool/leisure centre. There is certainly plenty to keep you busy! I'm not sure how public transport is there but in addition to the other supermarkets mentioned there is also a Waitrose.

Forgot about waitrose! Too posh for me :)

Yes the weather in the winter is very harsh, a lot of snow/ice. Was particularly bad this spring!

The theatre marrow refers to is great, lots of kids shows:

Thanks George and Marrow - that is all good to know. We would be working from home so wouldn't have to commute anywhere. And I am a huge Waitrose fan so that is a big tick :-). Anything else I should know? Areas to avoid / aim for?

Hi we lived v near Buxton for many years 'down the hill' nr Macclesfield. Loved Buxton. Fab park, lots of nice little shops, very friendly, great Opera House and the great outdoors - beautiful. Good train links to Mcr.

Weather? Can get a bit parky Grin

I'm sorry I can't recommend an area of Buxton to live in, but do know they vary so best to get advice from someone who knows more than me! I'd avoid Fairfield but can't help with best areas.

The only thing I'd say about not driving is that there is some stunning countryside around and you'll not be able to get to most of it without a car. Not saying you should drive just that it's worth considering occasionally. There's castleton, edale, hope, hayfield, kinder scout, all the Derbyshire Dales on your doorstep..you can get to some by bus/train but it's not easy. Depends how much you like the great outdoors I guess!
