Have just bought a property that needs total renovation.we are having a new toilet room put into the utilility room. So far no problem. But friends say the toilet should face the door. I cannot see a problem with the toilet being at right angles if it fits in better. Help

Um. Any angle is fine.

only 1 of the toilets in our house face the door, the other 2 are at right angles to the doors

Interesting question.
You can do what ever but I think facing door is best if possible.
Many years ago when I had a toilet at right angle to the door the seat kept falling coming lose and it seemed to be due to strange angle people parked their bums on it.
Perhaps that was just me!

it will depend on the shape of the room too e.g. our en-suite is long and narrow so the toilet fits best facing the window (not the door) so the sink can fit in beside it and the shower is along the back wall so couldnt put the toilet there either

I dont know many bathrooms where the toilet faces the door e.g. my mum's and sister's toilets also dont face the door.

MrsTaraPlumbing - you are so right! The seat on our toilet that is at right angles gradually becomes wonky. I'd never thought that this was because people can't be bothered to sit down quite right on the toilet before!

Bad feng shui apparently to have your toilet face a door - something about flushing your future or money away. I remember a friend proclaiming that when I proudly showed off my new ensuite.

Distance to soil stack is more important I would have thought.
