Planning permission for a shed?

We're about to move into a new house and our new landlord (social housing) has said that if we wish to have a shed in our garden larger than 8ft by 6ft then we need planning permission of the local council. The one we have is 10ft by 8ft so do we really have to go through the faff of getting planning permission for that? I've looked on the council website but the info on it is all in legal speak so I can't make head nor tale of it!

Phone up the council in the morning - they should have a duty planner who you can speak to who should be able to give you advice. It may be that the permitted development rights have been removed but the council will be able to explain everything.

It was many years ago that i looked in to it in my area. At that time we could have a shed of any size it was only the height that was restricted. i seem to recall 13 feet max height but could be wrong.
But if the shed would be nearer to the road than the house (in a front or side garden - the different rules applied and I think planning permission may have been needed.
By interested to here what OP finds out.

I would ring the council. As Daisy pointed out permitted developement may have been revoked. We live on a new development (5 years old) and have noticed loads of Planning applications for conservatories which should be under permitted developement. However on digging around on the planning docs for our development, it seems the council put that there was no PD on our properties as part of the planning concent.

Contacted local council on Friday. Top and bottom of it is that no one there can give me an answer as to whether we need planning permission for our shed. We need to pay a fee of £25 though and then miraculously an answer can be given. So pay up and then the people that don't know now whether my 10x8 shed is too big suddenly know. If it's a yes then it's 'only' cost us £25, a no will cost us anything up to £175! It's a shed ffs! Madness!

How ridiculous!
Write a letter of complaint to who ever is in charge of the Planning dept,
And to the council leader and to your local councillor.
You should be able to find all the names on your local authority website and be able to email them directly.
There should be clear rules for when PP is needed for simple routine enquires like you are asking.
And ideally those things should be on their website.

Anyway.
My local authority website does link to the information that you need;
here:
www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/outbuildings/

If it's a fairly new development (last 5-10yrs in some areas longer) it should be easy to look up if there were any permitted development rights removed. Go to your council website, look up the planning department, from their bit of website you should be able to look up planning applications for your address. This should have a document attached to it either saying planning restrictions or the actual approval document which should list any planning restrictions.
Otherwise the restrictions are as on the link the previous poster sent.
