Wanting to re-locate within 30 mins of Newark Notts..where is nice??

Well the title says it all really...got some of dh's family there, but they aren't natives so only have an outsiders view of areas. MIL would like us close to her- just on out-skirts of Newark. I would like to be in a small community, picturesque village with a primary school. Have looked at Caunton (nice but expenny) Collingham (didn't like the main rd) Bassingham...
Not sure about Sutton on Trent/ Muskham and don't know the areas to the south. Any insight would be great. thanks
