I have wallpaper which is gold and red demask

Sounds hideous but is v elegant and I love it. I have red accessories for the rest of the room but I don't know what colour to paint the other walls- we're only wallpapering the two alcoves.
Any suggestions?

I'd do them cream tbh, something light like almond white

Yes I was thinking a light colour but I think white is too harsh, will look at almond white but I quite want to avoid yellowy whites that verge on magnolia as I loath magnolia having lived in rented places for years!

I would go for black or dusky antique pink - depending on what look you are after.

Not going mad btw - I have some black and dark grey rooms in my house and they can look stunning.

I hate magnolia too. I have almond white against gold butterfly wallpaper and it goes really well, there's another that dulux do that's white with a very slight golden hint
