Stair handrail

OK, 1970's house refurbishment. We just need to replace the handrail (as we have walls either side of stairwell):

metal or wood?
If wood - painted or "wood"

We have dark oak wood flooring in the downstairs hall, beigey/brown carpet on stairs and top hallway and Dulux Timeless (off white) on walls.

Help (again smile) please

I like metal (silver) but dh is worried it will be too cold. I am worried wood will clash with hall...
