Wood, bamboo, carpet?

We live in an 80s box with a sitting/dining room. It is currently carpeted in a disgusting green which has been vommed on by baby DD and which I hate.

The thing is being rather impoverished we laid cheap vinyl (wood pattern) in the kitchen and cheap hardwearing carpet replaced the swirly shagpile in the hall/stairs/landing a few months ago. We've come into a bit of money and would like to refloor the main living area but I don't want the same carpet as the hall as it's quite cheapo and scratchy.

We've got 2 boys and a baby so I just want hardwearing, easy to clean and neutral for the floor. Will laminate style be too cold do you think? If so what would you put on the floor?
