Farnham is a great choice. If your DS already has a place at All Hallows- very good school- you could live anywhere. South Farnham has some reasonably priced houses near the station and close to transport links. North Farnham is also nice, but I would avoid the area near Sandy Hill. (It may be better now; when we moved here 20 plus years ago, it had a bad reputation.) Aldershot has had a lot of investment recently and has a new cinema complex, for instance. It was one of Phil and Kirstie's top tips for up and coming areas a couple of years ago.
I live in N Farnham! Just moved here from the US in August. I have 2 DSs and we love the area. As far as I can see, the only downside is the gigantic hill between my house and town (not so bad going down but a real back breaker on the way back up! We like the area and our nearest school has a great reputation so we are hoping oldest DS will attend there. Aldershot is not that bad, either. I wouldn't go there for clothes shopping but I actually often drive there to go to the new supermarket since it has free parking and the car park is covered. Also, N Farnham has great access to Reading, Basingstoke, etc.
There is nothing about Aldershot to be afraid of. It's an army town, with a good diverse feel now that so many Nepalese are living nearby. The street market on a Thursday, for example, has massively improved because the Nepalese prefer fresh veg direct from a market to pre-bagged supermarket stuff. There is a ski centre, a cinema, an athletics track and a lido. Farnham is rather less diverse. Mostly middle-class white people, all with the same life experience and aspirations. Plenty of charity shops, plenty of coffee shops, a Whistles, a Joules and a Crew Clothing. Which is fine, if you like that sort of thing.
So, North Farnham is great. Hale, Weybourne, even Badshot Lea. All nice, full of nice people, not all the same, and some quite interesting, and you're not surrounded entirely by the blandness of sameness in south Farnham, but equally, you're near enough to Aldershot to get a bit of diversity and spice in your life.
After an age we have finally decided to move to Farnham. My DS will attend All Hallows and therefore we had assumed that we would be looking at property in the north of Farnham (cheaper too, good stuff) but I am seeing all sorts of scary stuff (mostly about proximity to Aldershot) around. Please can anyone help me with which areas to avoid?
