Advice needed on larder cupboard design

Hello

I'm lucky to be getting a large larder cupboard in our new kitchen. This is the type with shelves inside plus on the doors, a bit like this:

mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=2081f7ed30&view=att&th=13c68709d17154eb&attid=0.5&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P9xMqf5SJa6v_0akLQ7TAf-&sadet=1359713571258&sads=m4CjzjcDesbrUCb0Nvo-f29URzc

Does anyone have something like this, and/or does anyone have any tips on the best layout/what to avoid etc?

Thanks in advance..

Have you had wicker basket storage before (assuming the bottom drawer inyour larder is wicker)?

I am getting my kitchen ripped out and those bloody things will be the first to go.
They look pretty enough but they get grubby and are a git to clean.

Other than that . Lovely.
I can't wait for my big new larder. And my officey bit. Hooray

Ok, think weight!

Avoid heavy bottles ect on the door shelves.

Next think use, things you use regularly need to the easiest to get to

I have to say I have one and the only problem I have is that my Spice jars don´t fit where they are supposed to go!

I also found that I wanted to use clear plastic storage a lot and had some shelve seperators / double height shevles but then mine is a different layout.

HTH

Also, I'm getting a granite top to double as a work top on top of the drawers. If your larder is deep enough it's quite handy.

I am very jealous! I was desperate for one of those in our new kitchen but budget wouldn't stretch. I've ended up with a larder unit with pull out drawers behind the door and actually I love it. so I recommend lots of drawers!

Are you going to have one with a marble slab inside for pastry?

What are you planning to keep in the big wooden drawers? A friend has one with similar looking drawers designed for bread - but the bread goes stale.

Also like in the picture hers is between a fridge and a cooker and I think it gets to warm.

I'm going to have a proper walk in pantry when our kitchen is finally done - can't wait as we currently have not enough space to do a weekly shop & keep stuff like flour.

IHeart - what do you store in the larder drawers?
It might be a silly question, but given I will have drawers elsewhere for non-food storage, I am wondering what those drawers inside the larder are good for?

Hmm Pagwatch, now you've got me worried, because whatever about wicker inside the larder, I've asked for the island unit to have one cut-out/wicker cupboard just to break up the monotony. It won't be facing the cooking/sink area though. And I might just chuck plastic containers or something in them as opposed to food/veg. I should also add that I am not at all obsessed with dust/cleaning (though that might change when I get my first ever new kitchen!).

mummywithnosleep, thanks, I will ask the designer the dimensions to make sure our spices fit in. (Especially the ones that are 10 years old as clearly we need to keep them....)
They've assured me the door shelves can take bottles of oil etc, but should I be worried?

SilasGreen I would LOVE a separate walk-in pantry but alas, no space.
I am worried about temperature as well.

Re worktops, I might put a marble slab in on the main/waist height shelf, just to keep extreme perishables on, but our new fridge will be bigger than anything I've had before so i'm hoping that will take the pressure off.

IHeart I am not expecting to make pastry in the larder - or are you talking about leaving it to rest there? We'll have a biggish island so plenty worktop space (maple hopefully) elsewhere.

I think it will be fine if you don't put anything that generates dust /debris.

Plastic bits and pieces would work.

I have big deep drawers in the cupboard. One is pasta and rice type stuff, one is tins, one is ingredients and stuff, and one is baking.

Bzzbee

I think if it is good company with a good garantee the doors will be fine.

I do keep bottels on mine, but near the hinges iyswim?

I also second the wicker baskets getting a bit grubby. I made "liners" for mine which I can change an wash! The wicker baskets are great for potatoes once lined!

DH fitted out an old cupboard as a larder copying some ideas from those posh ones -it's quite functional but its a good concept and amazing what you can cram in.

3 half-depth shelves at the top for jars, packets etc
Spice racks inside doors, one side narrow for tiny jars, the other deeper for things that are not heavy (gravy granules etc). (Mine are just wire ones from ebay).

Then a full depth shelf at about worktop level, another shelf and the cupboard base gives you three tall spaces for cereals, wine bottles, big containers and the veg box. I think the larder in the OP's link doesn't make good use of its lower space TBH!

I have another base unit with pulling-out inner drawers that takes some overflow of pasta packets, baking stuff (like this). They are lots more accessible than if they were on a deep shelf. If I'd had a slightly bigger larder cupboard I might have put one or two similar shallow-ish drawers inside it for those though.

YY to plastic tupperware and lunchboxes in a wicker basket, excellent poncey way to hide the hideous things. Also they are nice for tea towels but Pag is right you don't want to find a mouldy courgette has managed to hide from you in the bottom of one.

I have one & love it. The only mistake was not having drawers/shelves deep enough to stand up cereal packets. They have a pull out drawer & lie on their sides, drives me nuts.

Thanks fossil, I like the idea of putting tea towels in the wicker, hadn't found a home for them yet and they annoy me in normal cupboard or drawers.

I have some pull out drawers towards the bottom, and shelves at the top. Lower drawers store pasta, rice, tins etc. Agree with pp to make sure there is a shelf big enough for cereal boxes.

I had a socket put in the cupboard so that I could put the microwave in if I wanted (at the moment it's actually in a separate utility-type room just off the kitchen, but I might still switch things around. I hate having stuff like that cluttering worksurfaces.
