Getting a private road adopted by the council

Hi all, has anyone got any experience of doing this?

I've recently moved into a new house on a new section of road attached to an existing culdesac, completing the culdesac so there can be no further buildings.

Unfortunately the developer went bust before completing the houses and because of this the application to get the road adopted by the council was never done. The houses were completed by contractors appointed by the adminstrators. Currently the section of road is jointly privately owned by the five houses along it.

From looking at the planning permission documents, the road had to meet current standards and it seems like it was intended to be adopted. From looking at the road, it does seem to meet these standards to my untrained eye. As in it has drains, kerbs, etc. It was only built last year, so no notable wear and tear. Yet.

I've emailed the local council asking them about the procedure for applying to get the road adopted, so we'll see if they reply and what they advise. However in the meantime, does anyone have any experience of going through the process and any words of wisdom they wish they'd known before they started?? :)

I can't offer you much advice but am sort of going through a similar thing to you & all I know for a fact is that the council may well be able to adopt your road (subject to other conditions, of course) as they only adopt roads that have five or more houses in.

I live in a cul-de-sac of 3 properties of which the road is currently owned by the developer who wants to sell it. If I find out any more info over the next few weeks I will let you know.
