ok so I've decided to paint my pine bedroom furniture white.

I know I have to sand it down but I do use an undercoat or a primer before I use the white paint?

Yes. I always use zinsser bulls eye 123 www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/z/ZINBE/
I then paint with F&b eggshell on top
I once painted with a homebase satin white and it scratched off all the time, whereas dresser in the kitchen has no chips or marks nearly 3 yrs on.

Perhaps instead is a bright white try an off white. My bedroom furniture is F&b great white. My dresser in kitchen and ahllway bench is skimming stone. I have even painted idea billy bookcases using the bulls eye primer. It is brilliant stuff
