Rent a house but want a home!

Am (hopefully!) in my last year of renting, deposit coming together nicely and the development I want to move to had just come through the planning sausage machine! Its likely to be another 12-18 months before properties go on sale. In meantime Im trying (but failing) to get on with things in rental. Its a nice enough house, but not a home. Its a new build so cream or white walls with cream carpets throughout (aarrgghh!) ... what can I do (on the cheap) to make it more homely for DP, DS(3) and I??!! Bedrooms I can live with (huuuuuge declutter required though!)...but main living space just depresses me! Ive brightened up downstairs WC with vivid pink accessories (wallart, towels and mat), kitchen is oak and black but think keeping it decluttered will help there. Living room - cream walls and sofa, TV on wall, 2xlarge 2 seater sofas, plum cushions and matching curtains...small storage unit...larger one for all DS toys...bored bored bored with it!!

Hmm sounds like you've done a lot already. New rug? Pictures on wall? Some kind of statement light?

Would some clashing colours work? Do you like bright colours generally?

Otherwise I think plum looks nice with soft grey.
Maybe a nice soft grey rug and a couple metallic cushions?

If you google 'plum and grey living room' you'll see a few sites thathave added a 3rd colour- bright canary yellow. Sounds weird but looks really fresh and modern.

How about creating a focal point as I'm guessing the sitting room doesn't have a fire. How about a place where you can put some flowers, light some candles in the evening? Cosy throws over the sofas. Fairy lights? A coffee table with books and lovely things on makes a room look homely. The Works to big cheap blank canvases - could you get your DSs to create some art for the walls?

Plum and grey! Have never thought of that but having seen Google images...that might be way forward! Agree its needing homely touches...sat looking at it now and its basically a playroom with a couple of sofas! Need to get it looking more like adult space...alternative storage for DS things that put it out of sight past bedtime. Something with high shelves too so I can get all my candles back out Smile
