The carpet that was left by the previous tenants (council house) is quite nice, beige wool, very neutral.
The doors, skirting and bannister are painted in white gloss, badly chipped and needs doing again, what type & colour of paint would look good?
The walls are papered in an embossed paper which isn't too offensive and are painted in a sort of light grey colour, this also needs a bit of sprucing up, feels a bit cold.

Any suggestions for me?

TIA

Would suggest an off-white eggshell for the woodwork (after a really good sanding down and filling of the existing gloss to ensure good adhesion and also making previous chips invisible).

No great suggestions on the walls ... a safe option would be a yellowish off-white (one of the Dulux Hints Of range) as it's slightly brighter and warmer than the grey you have and won't argue with the carpet, but depending on the amount of light and whether it's likely to be scuffed etc you might want more colour .... a kind of mushroom brown as a compromise between the grey and the beige of the carpet?

Like the sound of the eggshell for woodwork, really don't like the gloss.

2 small children so cuffs are quite likely, a mushroom colour would be nice, only natural light is a small window on the upstairs landing.

Scuffs not cuffs!

When we bought our first house, we preferred egg shell for woodwork but found it dirtied really easily. Gloss tends to look much fresher for longer and can be wiped down more easily.

We've just redecorated and moved
Into our new home. So I second white eggshell for woodwork. We used Natural Calico for the walls downstairs and Timeless for upstairs (Dulux range).

Calico is a nice colour - we used it in a previous house. Maybe too pale to be practical in a hallway?

We haven't had a problem with wiping down eggshell. Given that we have lots of those doors with multiple panels that catch loads of dust, and complex skirting ditto, and so wipe down often, I think we would have noiced a problem if there was one.

F&B eggshell (whatever you think of the rest of their range) is much nicer to work with than Dulux IME. Applies much more easily, drips less, great pigment density, easy to brush out.

Those are the same type of doors that we have, dust magnets.
