ours in 90 cm on one side and 100 cm on the other. the 90cm side always feels a bit tight if you ask me.

We are planning an island at the moment and we have been told 100cm to 110cm. Any less is too tight, any more you need to take a step to lift something from the hob to the island IYSWIM.

How long/wide the island is will depand on how big your kitchen is and your preferred design. We are planning something in the region of 180cm x 130cm.

Our island is 2.5m x 94cm. I wish we had gone for 3m, like the kitchen designer suggested.

It is 90cm from the wall units, which is fine most of the time, but can be a squeeze if you are trying to pass one another. I think we should have made it 100cm.

If you are getting an island, I would recommend pop up sockets with USB ports like this. They are brilliant.

I've been shouted down on this before, but 120cm is recommended in the kitchen design books (Terence Conran, Jonny Grey etc) and I've always found it worked in kitchens I've done.

You could go for less if one side is blank wall and you have no cupboards to open on the other side, but as soon as you have to bend down to get something out of a cupboard/drawer, or get food out of an oven, you're best with 120cm.

120 if you have the space, unless it leaves you will a small island!
never go less than 90 either, regs is 75 for door openings for walkways,
but then you have to take into consideration the size of your room so all is in proportion 100/110 is fine in 98% of cases just make sure the island doesn't look to big or small yet big enough to be worth having for its need

I researched this a bit when planning mine. Have 4 feet in one gap as range one side and sink other - so a bit wider so you don't bash bottoms (although they are offset IYSWIM). Other side is 3 feet as drawers one side and side of dishwasher on other.
