A red living room ?

Heswall · 10/04/2012 13:13

I have a rubbish but stone coloured sofa, oak furniture and the room leads onto the garden.
I quite like the poppy range in Next, probaby wouldn't pick that particular one as it's instantly recognisable.
How much in the way of wallpaper, cushions, rugs, curtains do you think you could get away with in red ?
TIA

This house had a poppy-red living room when we moved in, it had a grey carpet and other bits in black and white, which tone OK. Kitchen worktops were also red.

I wouldn't want it again. You can have red curtains and cushions and rugs without being overpowering.

I can't stand carpet so don't that to co ordinate at all.
My mums kitchen is white, red and black and looks shit in my opinion and she has a red sofa too again shitso i've seen how not to do it.
The wall paper I like is this www.johnlewis.com/230561240/Product.aspx to go either side of the fireplace.
Don't like the matching curtains so they would be plain.

I would ditch the feature walls and buy some art in the colours you like and a big rug and bring in a bit of interest with tall flowers like lilies. One client I had was mad on that dandelion clock motif. I still have one of teh lampshades you can have it if you want it Grin

I have too many lamps and not enough surfaces to put them on but thanks for the offer, appreciated.
I'm concerned that everyone with houses in our bracket that I look on rightmove at has that dandelion wallpaper or table cloth or curtains somewhere in the house. But I do like it.

Its a ceiling lamp btw not a table lamp. The paper looks overkill believe me

I've got gorgeous white company art deco ceiling lights that I've waited 5 years to use, they are going up !

How about curtains and matching cushions with a plain rug, does that work ?

I think feature walls are a bit passé. I would second what Noddy said re art and a rug.

Or maybe paint one wall in that red, then just cushions. I think a painted feature wall is ok, but papered looks passé. Conversely, I think a whole papered room is fab.

I'm worried a whole red room might send the kids over the edge, they are erm lively enough as it.

I never recommend matching curtains and cushions when I do interiors work, IMO it looks a bit naff.
Perhaps a more neutral colour on the walls would work, with rich red in a rug or curtains?
Dark chocolate brown/grey looks fantastic against red.

Cushions/rugs and curtains are fine with white walls. Or go for one red wallpapered wall with a co-ordinating colour like stone for rugs/cushions/curtains etc.

I don't like grey with red it reminds me of teenagers bedrooms in the 80's.

welovesausagedogs, that is exactly what I had in mind Grin

I have chocolate sofas, with red cushions (all different) red poppies in a silver/red vase (50p from a charity shop) mango wood dark furniture with just touches of red in knick knacks (red candle in clear hurricane lamp, red veined marble egg sort of thing)

Cream very high walls, with a big abstract painting on the wall (curtsey of DDIL, in choc, cream coffee and a splash of red)
