Anyone got a breakfast bar at chair level?

The first of many kitchen threads, I suspect...

We have a nice sized kitchen but there are 3 doors on one side of it, which limits almost everything. We'd like to stick with a table but having looked at all the permutations it would be in the way, either between the hob and fridge Hmm or blocking the sink.

We have always hated breakfast bars though!

There is a place where we could have a bit 'jutting out' but we'd want it at chair level. PILs have this and theirs is uber-naff, sort of angled round. Do these things work and is there a way of making them not look horrible? I'm not keen on those chrome pillar type legs to hold things up either.

This is going to be a long process, I think!

Is there room for a small island?
I personally think a breakfast bar at chair level would look crap! Just my opinion......

isn't a breakfast bar at chair level basically a fixed table?

I've lived in a few places with one of those fold-down tables fixed to the wall, and I think they're actually really rather useful - if you can manage to keep them clear of junk...

We had a breakfast bar when we first moved into this house, odd shaped kitchen, but at stool / raised height rather than chair height. When DD2 needed to sit at it though (rather than in a high chair) it wasn't safe and we took it out and put a small table in there instead. Its not fixed to the wall but it might as well be - we never pull it away from the wall and we sit around the other 3 sides if you see what I mean. I'm not sure that a breakfast bar would look right at that height - I suppose it depends on the style of the kitchen and whether you make it look like a breakfast bar rather than a table, what seating you use. Could you not have a table?

I have the same concerns! It would be basically a fixed table but with one end attached to the worktop, just dropped down a bit. PILs one is deeply, deeply uncool but does make good use of the space...

Island won't really fit and we don't want high seating at all. I favour tables generally but we've been playing around with the floor plan all week and we're just going to be tripping over it the whole time.

Stuck now!

My parents have one too! Worktop with a leg, table height, one end to wall, curved the other ends. The shape was very carefully planned to fit a little gap between a cupboard and a window. Doesn't look too cool, true, but I have to concur it's pretty useful not only for eating but serving out, baking and other activities. A lower area is not bad ergonomically especially if you're short.

Maybe make it out of timber rather than speckly marble laminate?

Ikea are good for table legs, in the office section, you can have black, wood, etc.

Oh I had forgotten they do random leg selections! Agree it needs to be made out of something nice. I still wish there was a better solution (I would LOOOOVE a 50s diner booth!) but I think it will be best for space.

It's boring being a grown-up.
