Are pyrolitic ovens worth the extra money?

If not, which oven would you recommend? No room for eye level double which would be my preference.... So will be integrated under the hob. I think a single might be better than two small ones? Or will I regret the flexibility? Help! Tia

Do you mean one that cleans itself? We've ordered a Samsung Oven, which does a steam clean. Parents have it an love it.

It also is a dual oven - it has a shelve you put in that means you can split the temperature and cook like a double oven.

Less than £400 so I think a great price.

Hmmm that looks good! But does the catalytic constant burning off of grease not make the oven super smokey? Im So confused

I have two Seimens side by side pyrolytic ovens. Only had them a month but huge improvement on only one oven in previous kitchen and the pyrolytic thing is great. You switch it on and it heats to about 500 degrees with the door locked. No smoke.
Hope that helps!

Dont know about pyrolitic but in last house we had a double built under oven and would get again in preference to a single. much better having a separate grill.

Oven repairman recently told me he has had to replace the elements in several cookers which have pyrolitic cleaning, because they wear out faster due to the very high heat used during the cleaning cycle. Personally I'd be prepared to take the risk if it meant not having to clean the oven Grin

Yes we have one! A John Lewis one it's fab! Totally recommend them.

I used to have a pyrolitic and the cleaning was very good. If you are having the oven underneath the hob have a look at the Neff slideaway door models. Nifty feature, you won't catch your legs on the oven door.

You can't have the slide away door on the pyrolitic model though. We went for one of each :)

Loved mine - a Neff. It did make the kitchen smokey, but I used the extractor full-blast and had the back door open so it was fine. I was very happy for the 6 years I didn't have to clean it. (but we've just moved :( and have now the most ridiculously small/ old-fashioned cooker possible)

It works, and there is no smoke from ours (oven door locks itself down)

it is nice not having to clean the oven, but am not sure it is worth the extra £££

I love the pyrolytic function, but it is only a single oven so not really big enough.

The doors and walls cavity have to be much thicker because of the extreme heat so you lose out in oven capacity.

Also you do have to do it regularly and I wonder how much that costs in electricity... Hmm

The Samsung has a 65ltr capacity which i think is a good size for a single oven?

If it saves me hours of scrubbing i'll happily pay the electricity Wink

YES to pyrolitic ovens. A necessity in my household.

I have had 2 Neff pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens for a year. It gives me three levels of intensity, locks the door when warming, cleaning & cooling, the letter H is on a digital display telling me it is still too warm.

The outside of the door remains cool to the touch whilst it is doing its' thing but the kitchen does get smokey - I have to have windows open or my eyes sting.

At the end of the process (usually one & a half hours in total) I wipe off the ash from the bottom of the oven with a damp cloth.

The oven also has a timer so you can set it to start cleaning at a certain time but I don't use that facility.

Definitely yes to pyrolitic ovens. Ours is a Miele and I love it. There?s no smoke in the kitchen at all. No smell. The fan in the oven makes a bit more noise than usual and the whole house gets very warm (did it yesterday and didn?t need to put the heating on). The oven door feels hot but I can still touch it without burning myself and the door locks so you can?t open it. I am truly amazed that it actually works. I did think it would be another gimmicky thing that doesn?t work as well as the pictures, but it really does.

How often do you clean them? One and a half hours on full blast sounds as if it is using a lot of power.

Report
Gipfeli · 16/01/2012 14:15

I use it about 3-4 times a year. I think I worked out once that the energy consumption works out approximately the same over a year as using the dishwasher once a week.

Plus on the days I use it we don?t need the heating on.

Having a new kitchen. Is a Quooker tap worth the expense, or should I stick to the old kettle?
Also choosing a single built in oven. Would you buy a pyrolitic oven? Are they really what they're cracked up to be? What make - Siemens, Neff? Also, induction hobs? Has anyone changed from gas to induction and regretted it? Finally microwave/oven combis - Siemens, Neff etc. do them. Has anyone had any experience with them and can offer me a few nuggets of wisdom?

Hi Dollydoo, was considering posting a very similar question as I need to choose appliances for our kitchen and I can't bear it - I just want someone to tell me what I should have!

From the thinking I've done so far and a bit of research on here I have decided I can live without a Quooker tap and will use the money on an induction hob as they are much easier to clean than gas. Wasn't considering a pyrolitic oven but now I've just read this thread I think I will. We had Bosch ovens in our old house and I thought they were great. I don't like my current Neff one but it turns out Siemens/Bosch/Neff are all the same company, just different price points.

I'd also love to hear anyone's oven//microwave combi oven/hob recommendations!

Going through the same dilemma. Think I am going to go with the new Neff Slide and hide door with steam function and pyrolitic cleaning. But as it hasn't been tried and tested so can't find a review am worried that things might go wrong! Oh well it's a lovely problem to have! Also trying to decide which hob and fridge freezer to have. So would love to hear all your recommendations thanks.

Quick post on some of the questions here:

  1. Pyrolytic

Pyrolytic ovens clean by heating to 500C for up to 3 hours depending on the oven and the degree of soiling.
They use energy in so doing but it's about €1 +/- and you're not BUYING Mr Muscle!!!

Also, how many of you have experienced odour contamination of food next cooked after chemical cleaning? It's awful.

Also, you don't have to do the cleaning yourself!

Another major advantage is that the pyro oven cleans all areas of the oven -even those hard-to-reach spots!

    Pyro smoke:
This caused by infrequent use of Pyro feature or where one has had a grease spill.

Avoid by cleaning up any large fat deposit before starting pyro clean and pyro clean more often.

    Pyro Microwaves

We've all experienced microwaves that are a biohazard after a few episodes of exploding beans etc! :) A pyrolytic micro is worth its weight in gold.

We did spend quite a bit on a kitchen refurb that included 2x Oven (One full, One compact w/Micro -but both pyro). Worth every penny.

Warming drawers are highly recommended too... you can even keep a 16" pizza in a box warm in them- but brilliant for getting plates ready while the ovens are preparing food. Yes, you can pop plates in the oven but they crack eventually.

Also great for heating croissants etc for a breakfast treat! Arguably the most under appreciated appliance there is.

    Quooker:

Awesome appliance. End of. We have them at home and at office. Msg me if you have any questions.

Kitchens are horrifically expensive... but, if it's worth doing, worth doing right!

Well I thought I'd update you all on the purchases and decisions I made in July 2015. Quooker tap- YES YES YES ! Worth the money not to have a kettle sitting around waiting to be descaled. Worth the money to havr 100 deg water on tap. I got the extra descaler tank which means there is less maintenance. So I have the boiler and descaler tanks in a 60 cm sink unit. If I had small kids I may not have gone for a hot tap like this as they are not foolproof in my opinion.
Siemens pyrolitic single oven - yes, its a treat. The cleaning is simple and awesome. Oven looks like new.
Siemens microwave oven - super duper!! Can't get it pyrolitic but doesn't need to be.
Siemens induction hob. Super! Get the oven with a timer function. Setting the timer causes the oven to turn off. Great for those times when you'd normally forget the stew on the cooker. Really easy to clean too.
Fischer and Paykel fridge freezer with filtered water and ice cube maker in freezer. Use it all the time!!! Ice maker doesn't take up loads of door space like on Samsung models..

Think that's it! Glad I spent the extra now!

Sorry I mean induction hob with timer function... To turn off your hob cooking (not oven- they aleeady have this as standard).
