If so who did you get to fit it?

No not necessarily, just thinking about it, would need to find someone to fit and treat it as cheaply as possible hence the question. I do adore it also and, unfortunately, now I have seen it in the flesh nothing looks as good. Need to get a quote before I get carried away though as is for hall and living room so quite a large expanse. was thinking of the second level boards with more knots which are slightly cheaper to keep cost down, have you seen them?

Hi. Sorry no. Unfortunately there is no cheap way of doing Diensen!! Or I would have it!

Are you specifically after Douglas Fir?

If you would look at other types you could look at a product called Eiger. They do solid and engineered. Predominantly oaks but other types too. Very beautiful and they do extra wide boards (up to 300mm). Appreciate Diensen do up to 450mm wide as well as 8m long but that's only with Dpuglas fir and it's something like £300 per sqm before fitting it. So seriously pricy.

I couldn't stretch to Diensen (well DH said: how much!!??!! ) so we went for. 200mm wide oak instead. Brushed and oiled. V v v lovely and as I have a toddler and baby competing to destroy my floors, I don't regret not getting the Diensen.

Thanks skandi - I have rather fallen in love with the Douglas Fir (why can't I fall in love with something from Wickes?) - but the cost is obviously a justification factor. I kind of have the opposite problem with DP - he said why dont we just do all the downstairs in it - including the playroom! As if.

Who did you get to put your floor in and do all the brushing and oiling?

Did you buy the boards and get someone else to do this?

Hi. No I got the whole lot done by a local flooring shop (with a good reputation).

Our house is a 200 year old lodge house and having most of the downstairs (except the wood panelled lounge and study) done meant the flooring folk did the fitting for very little as long as they could take photos for their web site in return.

We had to go for engineered (7mm of oak on top so very high grade and retails for £55p sqm). So it came ready brushed and oiled. We had to go for engineered because part of our large entrance and hall way has flagstones underneath and the other part suspended timber floor so not suitable for solid wood.

Whether you go with solid or engineered if it's tongue and groove make sure the top is at least 6mm otherwise you will only be able to sand it a couple of times even the solid plank as you will sand down beyond the lip of the tongue and the floor will come apart. With 7mm you can sand 5 or 6 times.

If your dp is happy to fork out for Diensen then do it!!! You would be mad not to.

Will price it up and, I'm sure, end up looking at a similar thing to what you have done. I think I actually prefer engineered to real wood (is currently crappy laminate in there). Ours is a modern house. We have lived in a horrible old rented house with hideous 70's style greens, beiges and reds everywhere for the last couple of years and I just love the cool, light, white streamlined look you get from the wide blonde floorboards throughout. My ideal would be the Douglas Fir everywhere with Dulux Trade Brilliant White on all the walls, and a white kitchen with light worktops! I will have to be careful not to overdo the cool, clinical look as a reaction to 70/80's hell been living in I think.

Funny how we are the only 2 people on MN who like Dinesen floors - I thought there'd be more.

I know! Thought more MNers had fab taste! Your plans for your interior sounds beautiful let me know if you do get Dinesen.

Ooh I love love Dinesen but the cost is way way out of my price range. I love it's simplicity and it looks so stylish! I would definitely go for it if I had the budget. We are currently doing our kitchen diner, it's a lovely 30ft long room and it would look fab in there but alas it will probably be engineered wood. I'm very !

I just came across your chat and was hoping to find out if you two did manage to get the dinesen flooring?

I am looking at getting the flooring but concerned about the installation. Because of the expensive costs I was hoping they would have an approved list of installers? Also I did not realise that I am having to treat it with the white soap also. This is what is worriying me the most!!

Still at the planning stage here too I am afraid - we don't get the keys for another couple of weeks so I have to wait til then to get someone in to measure up for a quote. Still haven't got any idea who to contact for a quote or fitting either. I thought, but I could be wrong, that the white soap was an optional finish?

I have been in regular contact with the company and I am starting to get a bit worried!!!

The wood panels comes unfinished. The floor needs to sanded down and polished before putting the white soap finish on it.

Unfortunately to me all their approved fitters are london based.

So I am thinking twice.

Where did you get the list of approve fitters? I am in London...... Have you tried floor fitting cOmpanies near you?

I just discovered your chat about Dinesen flooring.
I'm planning to see in in real at Saatchi Gallery London and will probably be blown away....
We are planning to refurbish&extend entire ground floor and are looking at about 100m2 flooring. How much does Dinesen cost????
We saw lovely engineered oak flooring at Natural Wood Company in Battersea/Wandsworth, but it's just average flooring.
How hard-wearing would Dinesen be in hallways?

hi. i install sand a finish dineson flooring. douglas fir is in all caracteristics the same as pine so similar results can be achived for a fraction of the price! in january this year i untook a project for a client on a buget and layed 350m2 of 200mm pine board t&g and scew and plugged to the sub floor and sanded and finished with dineson lye and soap. the end result was the same shade and texture as the expensive stuff and my client was very happy.

I'm also in love with Dinesen floors, but on the budget. Where did you buy the dinesen lye floormaster? I see you can buy the soap in their webshop, but can't see the lye. Also as a floor profesional, what would be your estimate (all in) for 50 m2 if we went with your suggestion?

I went to the Saatchi Gallery and looked at the floor there and have also been to other places where they have the wide board and I must say both the oak and Douglas Fir look amazing in a house or flat or even in commercial buildings. The price is very high but you get what you pay for and because it is usually a white finish its all the rage at the moment.

I'm also in love with Dinesen floors, apparently the Saatchi gallery has 3000 people through there each day how did you find it looked was it showing much wear?
