Typical day rate for electrician in Essex

Anyone got any idea on the above?

I have just had an extraordinary quote from an electrician for the works associated with a renovation project. We have some new rooms (ok, so start from scratch with electrics in 2 big rooms plus small shower room)).

After that, we are talking moving a few sockets/existing light fittings etc....

He wants £10k. If he is on a day rate of, say, £250, that equates to 40 days work - I'd be surprised if it takes more than 5-7 working days to do this. Clearly, there is some cost for new cables etc, and a few new fittings (but not many - most are being reused).

I suspect I am being ripped off.....?? Or is my starting point of assuming a £250 a day rate way off the mark?

Get some more quotes and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs and likely timescale for the work.

Our electrician charges £180 a day and he is very good, we are in Norwich.

I am asking for a breakdown/timescales for sure, I just wondered whether my estimate of a day rate was vaguely in the right ball park, or if for some reason, electricians were actually all millionaires !

Hard to get an alternative quote, because I kind of need the electrician that comes with my main contractor... though even if I have to stick with him for all the new build bits, I can definitely get an alternative to come in and do all the moving of the other switches and sockets etc...

Cheers, I had hoped I wasn't underestimating with £250 a day, and sounds like I am not!
