Quite simply I need a new hoover - My Dyson needs expensive replacement parts.

I have been happy with the Dyson performance I have had it 6 years. I have looked at the best buys on Which and Miele is the clear winner but I do not like the thought of going back to bags. Changing to a bagless cylinder was so liberating after the hassle I always had so I am considering getting a Dyson again anyway.

So do I need convincing that a Miele really is worth the hassle of bags or is the Dyson perfectly acceptable? I have two cats, lots of laminate flooring and (soon) 3 children.

Please help me make my mind up as I keep going round in circles!

Please tell me what to do so I can abdicate all responsibility - to be honest after months of using a cleaner held together with masking tape anything is going to be a huuuge improvement!

We don't have a Miele, we ahve a Sebo, but I was going to say that the Bag system is SOOO easy and I love the fact it slides out and I put it straight in the bin

I wouldn't worry about the Bags, is there another reason why you don't want the miele?

I've just done the switch after 5 years. Unlike you, I've hated my upright Dyson as it is so heavy and I have a big expanse of wood floors now. Plus, the Dyson seemed to lose power and suction in the last few months. We also have two dogs now, and I really needed something I could whip out every few days to keep up with the dirt and hair.

Bought the Miele 4211 (cream) (as recommended on Which) and have used it once so far. I think the compact, lightweight nature of it will make up for the occassional hassle of the bags. Plus, it seems to have great power/suction. And for the price, £120 online, I don't think it can be beat.

I was just thinking about runing costs plus hassle factor of making sure you have the bags when you need them. I am hideously disorganised and so not having to worry wether I have bags or where they are etc. is appealing!

On the other hand the uniformly good reviews of Miele and sebo are hard too resist. Thank you for replying btw.

How quickly does a bag get filled - just thinking about the running cost.

running cost obsession - I think i am practicing my reasoning with (tightwad) dh about buying a more expensive Dyson - as opposed to cheaper Miele with beter reviews - maybe I do need to get over my bag 'isshoos'!

good thing with bags is that you don't have to breathe in the dust!

I just dump contents straight into bin outside front door - plus I then am not contributing to further production through making bags - is Dyson greener option? I reckon if I was really green I would be sweeping and using dustpan and beating the rugs on a clothes line

Well we vacuum every day and we only change the bag probably every three weeks.

We've now got a Miele and used to have a Dyson.

I prefer the Miele, it picks up a lot better (we have 3 cats) and is so much lighter than the Dyson. I found the Dyson stupidly heavy and found it a right pain on the stairs.

I have seen the light and will NEVER buy a Dyson again - have just replaced my old Dyson Animal with a Miele - it works so much better!

Okay Okay - you have convinced me I am ordering a Miele tt5000 cat and dog - It looks the biz and I am sure I will not regret it.

Does anyone use the cheapo bags from eBay - the non-genuine ones here? Do they work ok, or should I stick to buying the genuine ones (also cheapish on eBay, but double the price of the real cheapo ones )?

Although the Miele uses bags it only loses suction when they are completely jammed.

I wouldn't buy the cheap paper ones though, the fabricky Miele branded ones hold the dust in much better. I buy several boxes at a time, as with most suppliers you only pay one lot of postage per order. The bags are only just over £1 each & it's well worth it for me (I gave my Dyson away )
