Well Hung Meat (serious subject, not porn!)

A while ago I could buy "aged" meat in Sainsburys in the Jamie Oliver range then it seemed to disappear. I haven't checked recently as it was the only reason I went to Sainsburys and I can't be fegged to go there just to be disappointed again. I could also buy it until quite recently in M&S, again its disappeared. I know I can get it mail order but I'd still rather choose my own. The local butcher is quite good but it would be more convenient to pick up in the supermarket. I looked on Ocado, couldn't see any.
Any ideas anyone? (apart from get a life!)

I think a butcher or direct farm sale (farmers market or mail order) is the only way to get it! The supermarkets just really don;t seem to get it - apparently your average supermarket shopper still thinks that meat has to be bright red to be fresh!

Great thread title, davros. Can you not ring your Sainsbury's to see when it comes in and plan your visits accordingly?

Davros England Thu 30-Sep-04 22:34:57

I could try but I'm not sure they even do it any more. DH and I always wince when we see that bright red meat in our local Budgens [emoticon of face like a cat's a**e]

I think (*think*) our Sainsbury's still has it - mind you this is based on having bought a salmonella corner joint a couple of weeks ago - maybe that was its last gasp...

JanH Thu 30-Sep-04 22:44:03

But they do have the Taste the Difference stuff as well as the Jamie - TtD is supposed to be hung, aged etc?

Davros England Thu 30-Sep-04 22:46:24

I'll look at their website tomorrow and maybe try to find out or drop into the nearby one. What's salmonella corner? The bargain bucket? Ugh!

mmm, sorry, Davros, pinched that from someone else! Orange-sticker heaven...lots of brill bragains to be had you know!

JanH Thu 30-Sep-04 22:50:19

i buy beef from our local farm shop and it is PURPLE - well, very dark red anyway. Nothing like supermarket meat, even that Jamie stuff. You can buy online from some farmshops if you can be bothered...and freeze it?

If you do decide to go the mail order route, big vote for Donald Russell Direct. THey are in Scotland but send the meat next day, flash frozen or fresh as you require, very impressed with their service and the meat, though expensive, is second to none. Think Nigella uses them too!

Thanks everyone, I'll give Sainsburys another go, maybe try mail order too, drooling at thought of beef rib with bone-in.

OMG, the Donald Russell Direct site has me drooling over my computer.

Thanks for the tip, lulupop.

Well, Friday was the first time I've had cause to go to Sainsburys since I posted this! And I got some Jamie Oliver matured Sirloin steak. It was fantastic. A week ago I bought some Sirloin in M&S against my better judgement, having vowed not to. Not only was it more expensive, partly because I could only buy 2 and not the 1 I wanted, but it was shit!!! I can' believe people eat that muck and go back for more. I will be making the trip to Sainsburys from now on.

Has nobody here tried wellhungmeat.com ?

VicarInaTutu Thu 18-Apr-13 15:16:38

yes - i have.

i really like well hung meat . com for great quality, free range organic meat.
its pricey though - however you can state preferences if you get a meat box or whatever.

i stopped ordering for a bit as cash strapped but will start again soon.

The well hung meat company is near me in Devon, their meat is scrummy. If they do mail order you should definitely go there.

How do I tell the difference between meat s that bn well hung and that which is 'old'. Aren t they both dark in comparison to the bright meat?
