insect repellent/ plug ins

Im going on holiday in Feb to the caribbean with my 15mth old, need to buy some insect repellent. But been getting so much conflicting information< that i am now confused. I have read a lot about Deet some websites say not to be used on under 2 yr olds, yet Boots say safe for 6 months plus. So i have just opted to trying the mosi guard to be on the safe side. Wanted to buy some plug in and have just read on a particular website (safariquip) that these are unsafe for under 3 year olds and expecting mothers, yet none of the other websites that sell the plug in things state this. Seen lots of talks on mumsnet of other mothers that have bought them. Can they really be that bad???
