How do reception teachers assess new starters?

I recently had a meeting with my childs preschool (not attached to school)and she told me how ds was doing and what age bandings he was in etc. She said they would be forwarding that information to new school.

Will the new school consider this fully credible or will they do their own assessment in September? Not sure how these things work.

They will do their own ime. Lots of children go into a new school year in September not able to achieve what they did at the end of the previous summer term because of the long break and new distractions. That isn't to say they necessarily disregard the previous report or place any less credence on an external one than from a linked preschool/nursery. You will usually have a parent/teacher meeting in first half of term to discuss your dc.

The school will consider any records that are sent. How much credence they give to them depends very much on the content ... if it is obviously exaggerated for example they may wish to assess from scratch. Schools are very aware that all kinds of things happen over holidays some fall back and others make progress so dismissing information from previous settings would be silly.

oi mrz!

while I have your attention (sorry I did post this on another thread but you maybe missed it)

I was wondering if there was any publication with advice on how parents can help their children with reception work?

Feenie linked to one for year 2 (fun activities to support reading/writing/maths etc) and reckoned you may know of a similar thing for reception... it'd be great if you could

pretty please

Ah that makes sense. I did ask his preschool teacher and she said considering how much effort they put into assessing kids and recording it all she'd be disappointed if the reception teacher did her own assessments.

But it makes sense that they would as in 2.5 months a child can learn so much and I hadn't even considered all the stuff they'd potentially forget.

As long as DS doesn't forget how to wipe his own bottom I'll be more than happy.
