Reception into Year 1- what changes?

DreamTeamGirl · 30/06/2010 23:05

DS is moving up into Year 1 in September and I am just wondering what will change

Is it a big shift towards less play, or is it more gradual?

Is there anything we need to do to prepare for the change?
All the advice I got to get him ready for reception was so useful! Thanks

Gradual shift to less play and outdoor time by summer term they have moved to structured breaks in dd's school. More directed, more sitting down. More homework! They also get proper outdoor PE sessions and music which they didn't in reception.

It starts to feel like "proper" school; you do feel like they are starting to learn in a more structured way. But it's not as if they are suddenly bolted to their desks reciting latin verbs.....Actually, mine found it quite a positive change, as they were ready for it. Any good school will make the move into KS1 seamless and enjoyable for the children. Your DS will probably be more preoccupied by the new teacher, new classroom, new coat-hook etc!

Lessons where children are expected to sit on the carpet to listen for 5 - 10 minutes,
then go to their tables
(and remember which table they sit at and not mind too much about not sitting with their friends)
and do what they were told to do on the carpet,
and then afterwards come back to the carpet and check that everyone really did learn what they were supposed to learn.
The teacher will build up to this though. Your child should know what the school sign is to ask the teacher a question, probably raise arm and wait for permission to talk, and not just wonder off if bored, or if needing the toilet.

reception classes shouldn't be working like Y1 in the summer term but Y1 classes should be working like reception classes in the autumn term (gov guidance)
In a good school the change should be gradual

Thanks all
We had the Year 1 visit today (my letter about it had gone missing but luckily someone told me when we got to school)

the Year 1 teacher seems lovely, and basically mirrored what you all said
Over the course of the Autumn term it will very gradually get more formalised- sounds like it IS a 'Good School'
They still do soft start too YAY

Thanks again
