DD1 (nearly 7) wants to know how to use brackets (parantheses I think is the correct term!).

Can anyone help?

Use round brackets (parentheses)
for additional information or explanation are used in a similar way to comas (many people consider that parentheses can be replaced by comas)

  1. To clarify or inform.
John's bike was red (bright red) with a white stripe.

  2. For asides and comments
The bike was pink (I kid you not).

    Use square brackets [brackets]
    for editorial information, etc

  3. To amend or supplement the given details
Her first book [The Magic Paintbrush] was written in 1989.
