Uniform trousers and skinny little boys - help please.

DS is 5 and very tall and very skinny, so we have perpetually descending trousers. Yes I have bought him more than one belt. Yes I have adjusted the waistbands.
Has anyone else got any advice on, for instance, which supermarket 'school trousers' are the most suited to long lean boys? Or any other ideas? The after-school club leader commented on it being a problem today...

hi, don't know if you might be interested but i have some boys black trousers for school that my ds has maybe once or twice (some never worn) aged 5-6 which i am quite happy to give you for free (just pay the postage) they are quite a slim fit age 5-6, think they are from tesco, matalan and adams if you want them. i have the same problem, at the moment ds is in age 7 trousers from freemans catalogue and he has just turned 6!

OP, Have you actually bought the ones with adjustable waistbands? Sorry for seeming obtuse, but it's not 100% clear what you mean by "I adjusted the waist bands". I don't know if you sewed or pulled the elastic ribbon inside as tight as possible. If you register for I-Want-My-Mum they have what looks like a helpful thread.

I have skinny boys too - and their trousers fall down.

Primark do skinny fit trousers - have you looked there ? Not sure about uniform ones because our school doesn't have uniform.

Solid, my ds1 is tall and very skinny and always one or two sizes above his age. I have tried tesco/bhs/asda etc and always go with M&S.

I seem to be able to pull those all the way in without a big bunch of material appearing around his bottom and they don't end up round his ankles either.

I buy them when they are on the 3 for 2 sale so get 3 pairs for £14 or £16 which seem to compete price wise with the supermarket ones.

Ds is very lean and skinny, he has narrow hips and a concave stomach, not an ounce of spare flesh on him and we tried M&S, BHS, Mothercare, Next, Asda.... The only ones that actually fit without using a belt and drawing the waist in leaving him looking like he's standing in the wind, are the ones from Tesco.

maybe not too practical for school trousers but when i had this with DS a pair of skinny jeans from skinny-sized zara were ace. at least that covered the weekends

I put an elasticated snake belt on my snake hipped lad, then he can still haul them up - m&s for the belt.

I but the jean style school trouser from Next for my skinny lad and he can keep them up, they are the same material (teflon coated) but styled like jeans so slim fitting at the hips and waist. Everything else just falls down

Thanks, will hit Asda (and try Next next time there is some spare cash). DLI, thank you for your kind offer but unfortunately DS' school insists on grey trousers not black.

I Bought some of the cheaper £3 (I think) trousers from M&S. Who do they make thes for - the waist band was huge!! Have to eboys 7 and 4yrs and they were both swamped. I'd class them as normal (no fat at all but not overly skinny) so can't imagine these trousers would fit the majority of kids. Had the buy the more expensive waist adjuster ones instead.

My ds is 4 and is thin with long legs. I bought M&S age 3 longer length trousers with adjustable waste, and they're perfect. Check their website.

Combat style from next - only ones that work for my 4yr old.

I gave up buying the supermarket trousers because I find they just don't work for skinnies (or they do and they just wear straight through them).

We had success with M&S one for years but then I worked out how much I was spending buying new ones (as he wears through the knees playing football on the tarmac and grass).

So this year, I went to GAP and bought 3 pairs of their chinos for boys. They have adjustable waists (fairly comfortable ones) and are made from that thick cotton that doesn't get wrecked.

Although they are far more expensive than the supermarket ones (think they are £12.50 a pair), I waited till they issued that 30% voucher and bought 3 pairs so pair about £27 for all 3 and those (touch wood) have lasted him last term and look like they will get through this term and next term too which is a real bargain for us given that he was getting through 3 or 4 pairs of supermarket ones a term.

So I would recommend GAP if your budget can stretch to that. We have found them a really good investment.

My very slim, snake-hipped 4 year old is currently wearing M&S school trousers- from memory I think they were about £7 a pair. They have the adjustable waist band and he is wearing an age 3 LONG. He needs the extra length because he's tall- but these fit quite nicely on the waist and hips and are only slight baggy in the bottom. Perhaps you could try getting your son a pair aged a year younger than he is but in the long length.

We've had sucess in Debenhams for my dd1, and yes she is in boys trousers! they come up slimmer than any of the girls ones we've found. She's 11 though, so I'm not sure what the smaller sizes are like.

They were pretty cheap £12ish for two pairs and have lasted very well, good quality material.

I got my DS1 trousers from Debenhams when he was in reception and had a tiny waist. I had the same problem that adjustable trousers didn't fit, and everything fell down.

He has filled out now he is in y2, and I can buy a lot of other brands. Good luck.

John Lewis do good black cotton trousers with adjustable elastic in the waistband, which were great for my ds who is a skinny thing and has eczema. Not cheap though.

We've found Debenhams best so far (Asda miles too baggy) for fit, though hes had them since September and the knees are looking a bit ropey now.

I found M+S were good for my slim boy. He is 5. I bought ones with adjustable waists and belts, but so far adjusting the waist has worked fine on its own. I also have a pair from John Lewis which is ok. So far they have survived the playground! These are the ones we chose bit more expensive but so we got them on the 3 for 2 offer.

nest jean style ones with adjustable waist work for skinny ds, but he's not tall for his age

Report
jollyma · 19/01/2010 21:23

I also buy M&S long length and then go down a size to get a better fit on the waist. Otherwise I get my needle and cotton out on a pair with flat front and elasticated back, these are really easy to unpick the side seams and take in a couple of inches (e.g. M&S cheap ones).
