Sudbourne, the faith school in Brixton (forgotten name) and Rosemead (?) used to be quite popular long ago when I lived in Brixton.

Sorry, the R. school is Herne Hill.

Sudbourne v. popular and you'd be looking for a place in later years, not reception.

Are you looking for state or private? Rosemead is private, and Oakfield is another private school pretty close to Tulse Hill. In terms of state primaries, Hitherfield is Tulse Hill, and sounds to be OK.

Stockwell primary is in Brixton. This is an outstanding school (Ofsted) and I have heard some really good reports about this school.

Hitherfield is a normal community school, not a church school, it's perfectly good from all I've heard, I don't think it's "Outstanding" on Ofsted at the moment but wouldn't surprise me if it improved its ratings over the next few years.

Sudbourne is v popular and have heard the catchment area is v v small as a result.

ironlikealion · 09/01/2010 10:31

Rosemead is a private school, have heard it's very nice. Rosendale is an excellent community (state) school in West Dulwich, the catchment is not too tiny though as it has a large intake.

Depends where you live anyway, are you moving at the moment? Plenty of good schools in Lambeth but catchment areas difficult due to huge numbers of children and lots of siblings getting first on the list!

Rosendale!!

That's the one I meant!

I'm sorry about that.

from where i live, i found out that hitherfield primary school is 20 minutes away if you walk but only 5 to 6 minutes by car.
is the distance can have a impact when applying?

The borough's website will have information about all the state schools, including the church schools. There is usually an admissions booklet which will tell you each school's admissions criteria and how many children were admitted each year under each of the criteria. Distance has a big impact when applying - apart from siblings and medical/compassionate circumstances, distance to school is usually the criterion on which applications are decided.

Have a look at this guide

Page 23 has a map of Lambeth with all the primary schools marked.

Page 27 shows that for Sept 09 admissions at Hitherfield the furthest away that any accepted pupil lived was 796.12 metres from the school. So if you have to walk for 20 minutes I can't see how you could possibly live near enough, sorry. However, if you're not applying at reception level things might be different.

You were asking about schools near Tulse Hill so maybe also worth looking at primary schools in Southwark?

BarkisIsWilling · 10/01/2010 20:19

WRT church schools, there are Holy Trinity and Christchurch C of E both walkable from Tulse Hill stn.
Another school near Hitherfield is Streatham Wells.

If the OP is 20 mins from Hitherfield there is no chance they'll get into Streatham Wells.

Can I hijack and ask if anyone has heard where the additional reception places in Lambeth are going to be? Called a week ago and apparently no decision had been made yet - but deadline for applications is 2 Feb so I hope there's some news soon...

You gotta point JiL. So noko might have to look towards the brixton/hh end of town?

sarimillie -

TBH I do not expect Lambeth to get their act together and publish details of any additional places until the summer term i.e. after applications deadline, as they did not do so last year. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong, obviously.

In the meantime this is what I reckon:

If you look at page 28 of the Primary Capital Programme document my reading of this is that there may be additional places eventually in

  • Henry Fawcett
  • Julians
  • Jessop
  • Larkhall
  • St Johns Angell Town
  • St Judes C of E
  • Stockwell Primary
  • Vauxhall Primary

but none of the building works seem to be ready for Sept this year, so maybe they won't take any more or maybe there will be some temporary classrooms while the building work gets sorted out.

Rosendale already has a bump class from last intake (Sept 09) so I would not expect them to have any extra places this year.

I would also be v surprised if any of the 1 form intake schools like Streatham Wells have any extra intake as I don't know where they would physically fit any more children in their grounds even if temporary classrooms are used.

The other thing I know about is that Lambeth Council is currently consulting on the possibility of expanding Henry Cavendish Primary School by creating an additional 2 forms of entry (60 pupils per year) at the Woodfield Centre on Dingley Lane, Streatham Hill. Henry Cavendish would therefore effectively be run as 2 two form entry schools, but remain under the management of a single governing body - see link

I think from OP that noko is near Tulse Hill.

Looking at it again, noko, your best bet might be Rosendale - it's a great school (Ofsted "outstanding") and has a big intake - 90 kids in each year (120 reception places last year only).

Why not call the school and see what they think about your chances from where you live?

JJ - because she doesn't think Lambeth will let us know about any extra reception places until after we've applied for this year! And she is probably right...

JJ6 · 12/01/2010 23:17

OK. I think you are right, but not sure if it would make any difference to your appplication as it would still be based on: cared for children, medical & social reasons, siblings and finally distance from school!! Have you read the lambeth guide to choosing a primary school 2010/11 it has some intersting stats on numbers from these groups that got places in 2009/10, apppeals and distance from schools.

Rosendale catchment area has become tiny - less than 700m. The whole world is wanting to get their kids into there these days. There are a lot of disgruntled parents out there.
