to write the letters correctly on the line, in reception.

DD has been given homework from school which are pictures and then she has to write the word under the picture.

For example: Picture of an egg then _ for her to write letters on. We sat down to do it earlier, then I went to take a phone call, when I came back she had completed all the words by herself.

However, on some of the letters, although formed correctly, they are not written on the line correctly so instead if the 'tail' going under the line. The whole letter is sitting above/ on the line (hope that make sense).

Do you think this wil be ok? Can't work out if the exercise is more about writting letters and sounding out words. Or forming them correctly on the lines.

Im very proud of her, and gave her loads of praise. But I'm not sure what the teacher was expecting her to do, and if i should have helped her more to get the 'tails' under the line.

Thanks all x

I really wouldn't worry about it at this age/ stage. She sounds like she did it really well.

As a governor in a primary school for a number of years, writing is a real issue in the computer /Nintendo age.

If your daughter is in reception, then what you describe is very good indeed and I wouldn't worry too much about sloping lines or decenders.

Yes its good to encourage and the sooner they learn the better.

My son overall is a pretty bright lad but he struggled with writing in the early years, but children develop at different rates and now aged 11 his writing puts mine to shame!

I wouldn't worry about it - she's only in reception. At least she is writing on the line and a lot of kids don't manage that for a while (I have one who still would rather not - she's 9). When you are sitting with her you can encourage her to make the tails dangle, but if she doesn't always remember at this stage, I wouldn't bother too much.
