Icecream or fruit?

Our school menu offers a choice post-main-course - pudding or fruit.

I think this is wrong. Two healthy choices would be good.

PS I'm not sure that this ice-cream has anything nutritious in it - more of a whipped yellow fats fest!

i'm sure it hasn't anything particularly nice in it but as long as the main meal is healthy I don't have a problem with it.

I would much prefer school children to eat like the French, salad, bread, main course, dessert or cheese. A well-rounded diet.

No food is 'good' or 'bad' to me though, its all about appropriate amounts and a generally balanced diet.

and your original question - both please,

Ah, but my point is that these children are at a point where they are learning about what is good for them. And actually the balance will be wrong if they choose fat and sugar over fruit.

NB I am a big fan of the French diet or rather my palate is. However they do not have adequate volumes of vegetables.

Frankly I wonder why people go on about fruit as it's just the same nutritionally as sugar in other forms. The body sees it and digests it much the same.

I much prefer vegetables, we don't really eat fruit in this house but we eat three portions of veg, lunch and dinner.

Why do people go on about fruit?

Fruit contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre and much more and probably far less sugar than your average pud.

We've had this thread before, where the majority of people seem to think a sweet pudding is acceptable every day . I'd rather it was once or twice a week, with cheese or fruit offered other days. Yoghurt often isn't a healthy choice as the fruit ones are loaded with sugar, DD just has plain yoghurt with fresh fruit (and loves it).

Our school actually serves 'proper' locally made ice cream, with emphasis on the cream .
