INCREDIBLE, but our reception class appeal was granted !

Amazingly our reception class appeal was granted - I couldn't quite believe it when I read the letter this morning; I have been convinced it would be impossible to circumvent the infant class size prejudice rules, I'd even bought the uniform for the alternate school

Although at the hearing we questioned the LA's measuring system (we missed a place by 36 FEET ), ambiguities in the admissions book and on the admissions form, the LA were found to have correctly implemented the admissions procedure.

The appeal was granted on the grounds that the panel considered the LA were unreasonable in not allocating a place on our son's exceptional social/medical circumstances (ex-looked after child, now adopted by us, and survivor of childhood cancer, and having had all our three older children at the same school over a period of the last 16 years). We had the LA's own senior eduational psychologist supporting us, the LA's post-adoption SW, and the local NHS trust consultant paediatrician supported us too.

Not all LA's have an 'exceptional social/medical circumstances' priority category, but ours does, and its next after LAC and SEN statement.

OMG - the relief DH and I both cried when we read the letter, our DS4 has had such a sh*t start in life we so wanted him to go to our local school five minutes walk away like his brothers, not one a mile and a half away, although the other school was lovely, being a designated school for deaf children and physically disabled children.

So I guess he's going to be child number 31, unless one of the other half-dozen appeals heard that day for the same school were granted awell
