I'm told they have ten applications for every reception place. Can this really be true? We'd hoped to send the boys there but not liking the odds!

Just try it.

There are lots of rumours that circulate about Nottingham's independent schools including my daughter's school which I was told is oversubscribed. Well yes, maybe, but in her year there is one place available; there were two at the beginning of this academic year.

I have been told that there are enough private school places for everyone in Nottingham who wants one and is willing to pay.

Nottingham High School has recently expanded, taking over PNEU Waverley Street and creating a schol for boys aged 4-7.

It also worth bearing in mind that some of the other feeder schools may be being affected by the expansion of the High Schools and The Elms at Trent College.

I do hope that's right. We've been working on the assumption that they're bright and will therefore get in. I'd not considered that the places might not be available. Its all rather stressful since DS1 would not be assessed until January/February 2009 but we are due to move house in a month or so (ours has sold) and had thought that catchment areas for state schools were not a problem we had to concern ourselves with. Now I'm thinking we might have to rent in West Bridgford for a year to ensure we have a fall back state place. I hate everything being so up in the air.

Are you completely set on NHS from the beginning? Why not Greenholme, Plumtree, Attenborough Prep, Grosvenor, etc even if your ultimate aim is NHS?

We moved here without bothering about schools - and they aren't good! - because I always planned for DD to go to NGHS but we have just declined a place for her. I didn't know we would until we received an offer from elsewhere.

Happy to talk more but would prefer offlist suewmumsnet at gmail.com
