Can I just have a little boast about dd who has been struggling academically..

dd is 5 and in Y1

Some of you may remember that I started a thread about dds school report and felt like her confidence was being damaged and that she never felt praised.

One of the areas she has always struggled in was reading, she struggled to read and recognise words.. it obviously didn't come easily to her. Her reception teacher was always positive about this and said it's not necessarily a bad thing as she's having to learn how to break words down rather than read by recognition and that this will help her in later life as it's something that some children never have to learn but then they sometimes struggle when they get older and are reading more complex words but her yr 1 teacher has always just said that she needs extra support in... well practically everything.

Anyway to cut a long story short... during the last term something really seems to have clicked for her she has rapidly moved up grades and is now reading well and is starting to 'overtake' (for want of a better word) her peers. Now I know it's not a competition or anything but dd had really worried herself and stressed about how she was no good at anything

Today she got an award at school for exceptional reading and I am just so proud of her. She had to get up in assembly and get a certificate. I'm so glad that the teachers have recognised and acknowledged the significant improvement and I am so proud of her, she has worked really hard and really deserves her recognition.

Just thought I'd share that with you

Well done to your DD! It is wonderful to see them suddenly get it, isn't it?

My DS was the same - went from being on of the worst readers in the class to one of the best. If only we knew when the 'click' would come it would save a lot of worry wouldn't it!

Fantastic. I think DS was at about the same stage (this point in Y1) when we could say reading had really clicked with him. And now one year later he adores reading - apparently his second favourite thing after football (he is obsessed) and he can read just about anything - although maybe not understand it. So sounds like your DD is on the road to that. And obviously all her other subjects will benefit from her newfound reading skills.

Well done to your dd mascara - I think some children click later than others and in the long term it has no relation to their innate reading ability and enjoyment of books
Great news

hi mascara, that's a lovely post to read!! Why shoudln't you be able to blow that trumpet!!

We all seem to have such tiring, hard jobs with the dc's, and its refreshing to read about a proud mother, and your dd doing so well now.

Her confidence must be sky high now. My dd is also in yr 1 and altho a great reader is struggling with maths ( not surprising as it was totally alien to me too) and I really feel for her.

Glad its all worked out for her.
