Finally in yr 6 DS#1 has seen the point of school

Had an 'encouraging' parents evening near the beginning of this term. School has appalling Ofsted report last term and it's making big changes. Heard that DS had been put into the top literacy set even though he is struggling a little there as his teacher thinks he needs pushing more (DS not 100% happy about that). Second to top maths set and doing fine. Reading age is only 10.2 or something so quite low compared to a few years back - worrying as we'd assumed he was fine there.

Anyway.... last night he came home full of himself as all the literacy sets got taught together for one lesson and the teacher told the lower sets that they were 'lucky' to be in the same class as the top set as they were so good DS chuffed to the ears about that (even though I'm not sure she was referring to him ). His maths is improving hugely and he is constantly getting house points and delighted comments on his maths hw. His reading age has gone up to 11. (thanks to much more reading at home) and best of all he is really enjoying science (after last yr when they did very little) and looking forward to secondary school where there will be more or it with great labs and a robotics suite.

It really feels as if he's got the point....and not a moment too soon. So proud of him

Sorry this is going to sound carping and I am genuinely pleased for you and your ds but...I'd be bloody furious if my child was in a lower set and was told she was 'lucky' to be in with the top sets. What a horrible thing to say.

Sorry (hits a nerve for me)!

That's wonderful. Positive teaching and praise can work wonders for a child. He sounds delightful. xx

enid - I was a bit at that too. Seems an odd thing to say. But being totally selfish I was pleased for my DS. The teacher said something similar to him when he was moved up to the top set. It's a first for him to be given such a boost. Normally he's an alsoran at everything...

Yes am pleased for your ds

Just another example of the poor struggling kids being given short shrift I suppose [stoic]

I don't think they are as such. DS has been one of those more than once. He was given extra help with his reading/literacy back in yr 3. But I think it was meant as encouragment rather than anything else. Not the way I'd have put it though....

2 more house points for science hw. >

They've reviewed the set for literacy and mad another one between the top and the middle set. DS#1 is now in that. Which is disappointing in a way although it's not really the same as being 'put down a set'. But the best thing is that he is outraged . If this has happened last year he'd couldn't have cared less....
