School trip to local sewage works :(

So a letter came through today stating that an 'exciting' school trip to the local sewage treatment works has been organised for my sons' year (year 6).

This is the only school trip this year and the other local schools have been to places like the Harry Potter studios or the Natural History Museum. I can't help but feel really disappointed for them especially as its their last year before secondary school.

Where have your children been this year?

Do not get stiffed to be a parent volunteer on this trip (speaking from bitter experience - I thought I was volunteering for the trip to Wagamamas Grin)
Are you sure it's their only trip of the year?

After the thread where almost none of the posters realised that you shouldn't flush tampons, I really believe that more education is needed around how our sewage system works!

Don't worry, you'll be bombarded with letters for mind bogglingly expensive trips once he starts high school Wink.

Garden centre. Sewage works sounds better, imho.

I remember going to a pizza factory with school. I will never eat pizza after that experience. Friends went to the sewage works, all they said afterwards was.... Sweetcorn. Lots and lots of it.

My dm was a primary school teacher for years and did many a trip to the poo factory (sewerage works). She always talks about all the tomatoes that used to grow there, presumably from the seeds left in poo.
It might not be exciting, but it is surely educational. I remember the horror on my daughters face when she learned that tap water is cleaned water and has been through human bodies many many times.

We went in a trip to the sewage works when I was at school. We got a lift back up the canal on the 'poo boat' (school was next to the docks - it was the olden days early 80s).

I went to the sewage works. It was utterly boring. We didn't even actually see any sewage. Worst trip ever.

We did this at school and it was brilliant! DS would probably love it too. Harry Potter studios sound great, but don't school trips usually have a more educational slant? Though DS is only in year one so I have no clue about what's usual these days.

I went to sewage works place in primary. It did really educate me and made me think. I couldn't believe so much rubbish ended up there, etc.
I would rather my ds go to those places for school trips, than going somewhere we can go as a fun family dayout.

They are advised to wear wellies as there are lots of muddy surfaces. Let's hope it is just mud!!

It will be a really good trip. Yep loads for tomatoes at sewage treatment works. If it is a well maintained works it will only be mid they are walking through!

They may have other trips during the year as well perhaps, rather than just the one???

We take our KS1 children (infant school) out of school on some form of visit/enrichment every term. In terms of asking parents for contributions for enrichment activities (inside or out of school) we are restricted to £28 per child per academic year so we do have to be a little creative with the enrichment on offer.

SolomonDaisy - they HP studios has a range of educational slants, either arranged by them or by the school.

Grin my dear old dad worked in waste water treatment in the area we lived and hosted many a school trip, until he worked his way up the management chain. It's clearly been a key school trip destination for a while (I'm 41).

I remember that trip from school- I loved it! A lot more fun than sitting on a coach for hours and then queuing in the rain at a theme park

My DD's class loved their trip to the sewage works. Loved the activities. Loved learning about cleaning water (having mixed up dirty water and then filtering it to clean it). Talked about it for ages.

I think this would be really interesting.

Y6 kids are still overly interested in poo and farts - they'll be in their element

The best trip I ever did at primary school in Brighton was down the sewers. (Just remember, we're talking late 60s here!). We had to climb down through a manhole. Anticipated with excitement and horror in equal measure, it turned out to be remarkably free from nasty odours down there!

Well your stories have given me a little bit of hope. Hopefully the kids will have a fab time was a bit disappointed as it has been the only trip so far this year and last years was a visit around the local Tesco!

You are being very narrow minded. What do you think they would learn at the Harry potter studios? Sewage works will be much more interesting and useful. Personally I wish more people went on tours of sewage works so they learnt what not to flush down the toilet!

Whilst this would be fascinating - I personally couldn't cope. Strong smells make me heave.

I think its a good trip overall - informative and interesting, but I do think there should be more emphasis on fun and hedonism for Y6 leavers
