When friendships change

My ds keeps falling out with his friend. Over the last year my ds has made some new friends and he prefers playing with them. His old friend is quite overpowering and can be a bit rough (in a playing way) which my ds doesn't like. I feel this is reason he is moving towards these new friends. Now the old friends mum has spoken to me about ds being mean, leaving out her son, saying he not his friend anymore. I have spoke to ds - I think some childish mean things have been said on both sides ie I'm not your friend anymore. I always encourage ds to include him, I say don't leave people out, everyone can be your friend, don't say people aren't your friends etc but I also think he is allowed to have other friends, that friendships change and I can't force him to be friends with someone. I want to say to the mum they just need to sort it out themselves but she is quite an overpowering personality as well. Shall I speak to the teacher about it?
