Important SERIOUS World Book Day costume question.

School theme is Disney. Does this mean everyone will be dressed in random superhero costumes (Disney or not)?

I'd be happy sending him as Woody or Hook or Prince Random from Any Fairytale but if everyone else is going to be in Batman/Hulk/Captain America/Spiderman costumes he will sulk, because if I make him dress up (which he hates) and its the wrong costume and all his little playmates are wearing whatever they already own I will be in trouble.

Star wars and marvel are owned by Disney so would imagine most boys will choose one of those characters

Its about stories, River and many many Disney stories are taken from older fairytales and folk tales. Is it so bad that the school take a populist approach, given the likelihood of the children knowing something about it? In their words:

'We will be studying Disney stories in class and exploring the Disney magic through a variety of mediums such as drama, art, performing, poetry and story writing. We are also lucky enough to have secured XXX company to come and perform Peter Pan on XXXday.'

There is a book stall and a creative competition and volunteer readers etc all week. I don't think its such a bad idea.

I'd be really disappointed if our school were to focus on Disney for World Book Day. Although in reality loads of girls were dressed as fucking Elsa anyway, drecreeing that "It is a book! I've got it!" because they have some fucking Frozen annual.

To answer your question, I'd guess pretty much all the boys will be in whatever costume they happen to own, which is likely to be Marvel.

All the boys will be Spiderman or Batman, possibly a Ninja Turtle or two.

They will spend the whole day super hero fly kicking each other in the playground

I think its a bid sad that all people think of with Disney is the cartoons and films and commercial stuff and not the great stories behind so much of it.

Leaving aside the Disney debate ... I'd ask his closest friends' parents what their boys are going as, and suggest costumes accordingly.

I'm a very big fan of Disney, we have many of the films and watch them a lot. But for too many children books come a very poor second to watching TV. World Book Day should surely be an opportunity to reverse that, just for a day.

Of course the real problem is that schools make it a dressing up event and most people only have dressing up from TV and film, so I can see that what the school are doing is running with that. Dressing up for WBD is a pain in the arse for many parents. So why not take the dressing up element out of it?

I can bet you I wouldn't be the only parent going at a Disney themed WBD at school.

Yes I can see that. I'm trying to make the most of it really. They do seem to be doing plenty of stuff for it though. DS1 is very anti-dressing up anyway. If he could go as just a Boy from a Book (jeans and tshirt) he would, but his playmates won't see it. He's only 5. He doesn't really do superheroes.

There may be many faces at Disney themes but there will be as many [phew] faces from parents who don't have the money or knowledge or time to research something and think 'thank fuck they can wear Elsa/Batman, that's close enough' Dressing up aside, I hope they will learn lots about traditional storytelling. (What? I'm a reception mum, I know no better yet....)

I would go NUTS if our school did that. If you want the theme to be Fairy Tales, then make it Fairy Tales. The Disney version is never a faithful reflection of the original. We had a Fantasy theme once - but books should never be categorised by a bleeding brand, ffs.

I very much doubt the girls are looking at it like that, they're just wearing a fab frock is all. Why do people assume that if a girl wears a princess dress they'll turn into a vacuous airhead? Do parents think their boys wearing Batman costumes means they're going to turn into vigilantes?

Personally it shows what society aspire for children. My daughter has princess dresses which she likes to wear at home. But I despair when school has 'heros and princesses' day. Can't girls be heros too?

Well. DS1 came home today full of how he and his friend B (a boy) argued about who was going to wear the Elsa dress at choosing time today .

Ds hates dressing up. Managed to get him last year in a dog onesie as the dog from the Lone Piners. He then reused the costume when he played Nana in a performance of Peter Pan over the summer. Peter Pan is Disney.
