Uniform- what do girls go back wearing in September?

Summer dress? Winter pinafore? I want to get uniform all sorted so I can pretend she's not going relax. I'd assumed winter and just seen a 'memory' type post of a friend's daughter trying on her uniform for first day of school and she's in a summer dress. I guess September could be warm doubtful, we're north west

For starting school, I'd say not summer dress, as you may only get a week's wear out of it. They all start in pinafores here.

MirandaWest · 29/07/2015 16:04

DD has always gone back wearing summer uniform although she doesn't wear it that long. Is often annoyingly warm when they go back in September though Grin. Most reception children tend to wear winter uniform though

PuppyMonkey · 29/07/2015 16:06

DD has sometimes gone back in summer dress if we get a warm few weeks. But for Reception, the crisp white shirt and pinafore look, with cardi is always the norm.

redskybynight · 29/07/2015 16:11

Is this Reception? If so I'd go for polo shirt and pinafore unless you have a hand-me-down summer dress and it's hot!

Girls in other years will be wearing a mix of pinafores/summer dresses/ skirts and trousers!

LooseSeal · 29/07/2015 16:14

At DDs school you can wear either summer or winter uniform up to October half term. When she started in reception I only had pinafores and it was an unusually hot September, most of the girls in her class were wearing summer dresses and I was about to crack and get a couple for her when the weather turned and suddenly everyone was in winter uniform.

Olivo · 29/07/2015 16:17

Probably worth checking o nthe school website - at DDs' school ,they have to wear summer until October half term ,then winter until the end of the Easter term.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2015 16:19

Unless it's Reception, when I wouldn't buy summer dresses, it entirely depends on the weather, same as summer term. Summer dresses allowed till half term, winter uniform allowed all year round (lots of choices- skirt, shorts, trousers, pinafores, tights, socks, jumper or cardi). DD has worn winter uniform about half the time this summer. Must say it's easier with DS whose only choice is trousers or shorts.

balletgirlmum · 29/07/2015 16:20

When dd was in primary anyone new to the school went in winter pinafore but anyone who had been to the nursery carried on wearing their summer dress until half term.

However when she was In year 3 they changed the rules & it became compulsory to wear winter uniform from September.

MooseyMoo · 29/07/2015 16:23

DD didn't go to the school nursery so I only had bought pinafores. The girls who were wearing summer dresses had been to school nursery.

She's starting Year 1 in Sept and will be in a summer dress if it's warm as she now has some.

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 29/07/2015 16:24

Thanks everyone. Yes, she's starting Reception. The friend's daughter does have 2 older sisters, maybe that's why the summer dress.

I hadn't even considered there might be Rules about it!

DD lives her Shorts/skorts, asda have some great ones. Its more important they can dress/undress themselves.. no small buttons, velcro, front zips .. tights on/off than what they look like.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/07/2015 16:28

Yes, avoid buttons where possible, socks easier than tights for PE days, trousers seem good till you see the state of the floors in an infants toilet Sad. Do check the rules though.

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 29/07/2015 16:36

Thanks again. So far we have a pinafore and 2 skirts. 2 polo shirts. 3 pairs of tights and some socks. Hadn't thought of no tights for PE- good point. I hear some hand me down trousers and shirts or blouses are coming our way.

Toilets hadn't been on my radar! I am now trying to convince myself the toilets will be delightful as there are only going to be 18 in Reception.

You meed more.polo shirts as they are comfy and get wrecked by darlings handy work ... more paint/glue/clay/glitter on them than the paper .....

Binit · 29/07/2015 17:04

Older girls usually go back wearing their summer dress, my dd will. But reception girls will generally wear a polo and pinafore as they don't have last summer's dress unless they have handmedowns.

Spag bol stains come out if you hang things out to dry in sunshine, might take a day or two, longer in winter, but it works.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 29/07/2015 18:50

Grandmas secret spot remover works wonders.

TeenAndTween · 29/07/2015 19:00

My DDs have always just gone back in winter uniform.

OP don't buy any more new logo uniform until you see if the school PTA does second hand uniform.

Pixi2 · 29/07/2015 19:04

My reception dd will be in regulation grey pleated skirts, white shirts and navy cardigans. With grey socks and black shoes. I'll be the one crying in the playground. I know she will be fine. She knows the teachers and already has a brother there. Nursery was non uniform so there's no summer dress to etch out a few extra weeks wear from.

Pixi2 · 29/07/2015 19:09

Just to add, we have 5 skirts, 8 polo shirts, 3 white shirts, 5 pairs of grey socks but I will be buying more as the washer likes to swallow one sock to every pair I put in, and 5 cardigans. As reserves she has Ds trousers and v neck jumpers.
Reception children ruin their clothes! It gets slightly better in yr 1. Experiencing yr2 this year so Ds is starting with the same amount of clothes (5pairs of trousers, 8 polo shirts, 5 jumpers...)

Lifeisabeach · 29/07/2015 20:47

My DD started reception last September and I bought her a couple of summer dresses as I knew she'd want to wear them if others were. Most of the girls in her class wore them for the first few weeks. DD still fitted in them at Easter so wore them all through the summer term too

I'm always amazed at the children who turn up to New Entrant Days ( we have 3 in the summer termSmile) in full summer school uniform. So the parents who bought this seem to send their children in it in September, presumably to get the wear out of it before they grow too much! Others turn up in September in winter uniform-so either is fine!

meglet · 29/07/2015 21:38

summer dresses or shorts here.

there's no rules on when they can wear certain items. depends on the temperature.

DreamingOfAFullNightsSleep · 29/07/2015 23:10

Thanks. Well, DH was wrong, we did not get hand me down trousers, we got another 2 skirts (so 4 in total)- and 8 white polo shirts. I have now added 5 knee length grey socks, 5 knee length white socks, white and grey ankle socks (for with the trousers which didn't materialise and I nipped to Asda for and bought one pair as they were all fairly grim and I'm not so sure she'll wear them Hmm ) I have 2 logo school jumpers and one logo cardigan. 2 pinafores. One pair of PE shorts, one logo PE t-shirt ordered as I saw the whole class seems to wear them Shock

That has to be it, right?! I'm looking at this vast pile for washing/ labelling with dismay.
