Bedtime for Junior school age children - Yr 3 - 6

I just wondered what time your children go to bed and get up for school during the week?

I have a DD in Yr 3 and a DS in Year 5. They are both in bed by 7.30. DS is an earlier riser and is always up by 6.30am, although he's often been up to use the toilet before that time. I have to wake DD at 7am. DS is always up early regardless of how late he goes to bed and is horrible when tired, same with DD although she will sleep late if she's up late. My ex has a real problem with their bedtimes and thinks they should be allowed to stay up until 8.30 - 9pm but I know they would be in terrible shape if this happened.

year 3 DS went to bed at 7:30 lights out by 8 by year 5 it was 8:30 lights out by 9 now in year 6 it is usually 8:45/9 with a little reading lights out by 9:15/9:30. Ds is always up at 7/7:30 no matter how late he goes to bed. Though last Saturday (the first Saturday after SATs) he slept till 8:30 almost unheard of!

Thanks for the info. I am wondering whether I should let DS stay up a little later.

DS is year 3 and in bed at 8 but reads until 8.30. I wake him at 7.15 if he is not up already. He stays up until 9 on a Saturday and can lie in on Sunday but is usually up by 8.

DD 11yo goes to bed around 9ish but she dances twice a week and doesn't get home till 9.00 so on those nights its closer to 10.00 by the time she has showered and had supper. She gets up at 7.30 for school but that is all about to change in September.

Mine are in yr 5 & 6 go to bed around 9 pm. My DD in yr 6 reads sometimes until 10 if I forget to tell her to stop earlier. They all get up at 7 with no problems.

Seems early to me. My DD (yr 4) goes to bed at 9pm and gets up at 6.45am. This is plenty of sleep for her, she never seems particularly tired. She goes to bed much later at weekends.

Ds is in yr4, and is in bed at 7 to be asleep by 7.30. He needs his sleep, and is horrible if over tired. Bedtime is based on the sleep a child needs, not on what adults think they do imo.

Mine are year 3 and year 5 and they go up at 7.30. They will then read and have a story and so lights out by about 8.15.

DS1 will then toss and turn for another half an hour.

They have to be up by 6.15 though.

My yr 4 starts to get ready for bed at 7:30, and lights out at 8:15 ish after a story. But a couple of evenings a week it's later as we fetch her older brother from clubs , she gets into bed by 8:45 at the latest, I usually make sure she is all ready for bed and in pyjamas before we get DS, then just do story on return home. She gets up at 7.
Her yr 7 brother goes to bed at 9, though it's 9:30/10 on club evenings by the time he's eaten, washed and completed any necessary homework. Gets up at 7:15.

Y3 has lights out at 8.00. She is late to bed a couple of nights a week because of activities. She is not an easy sleeper and has gone to bed at 8.00 since about Y1 because she wouldn't drop off any earlier, but 7.30 lights out sounds early for a Y5 to me.

DD is also an early riser like your DS. We have a rule of no lights on before 7am (7.30 at weekends) to avoid a vicious circle of her waking earlier and earlier.

Ds 9 and dd 7 share a room but its changeble... generally up and settling 7 to 7.30 onwards sometimes to watch a film, sometimes to read. Lights out in between 8 and 9 depending on how early in the week/term it is and how they seem. Ds often wakes naturally at 7 ish and dd usuallu woken by me 7 15 ish. At the weekend they can stay up until 9.30/10 and will sleep in later too.

Y4 DD1 starts getting ready at 7-7.30ish. Sometimes she's ready for bed that early and is asleep pretty quickly, other times she'll read/draw in her room until 8 or 8.30. Regardless of bedtime, she's usually up just after 6am.

DS1 is Year 6 and will be in bed on a ninth with no activities by 8 asleep by 8.15 but two nights a week he has clubs which mean bed is more like 9pm
DS2 is year 5 and is lights off by 8pm except cub nights
DD is year 3 and is usually in bed by 7 to 7.15 except on beaver night when it is 8
They are all up at 6 because we have to to get them to school I always have to wake them up.
Even on holidays they are all up by 6.30am they have always been early risers.

Lights off by 9 here for a yr5 and yr6. They don't need to be up until 8 though and I often have to gently wake DD (yr6)

Year 3 DD is in bed for 7.30, lights out at 8pm on school nights. Weekends it's bed by 8, lights out at 8.30pm. She's usually awake by about 7am unless she's been doing sneaky reading under the covers.

Sigh. Yr3 dd has final final lights out at 9. She's simply not tired before then and still wakes naturally just before 7.
Won't be long and she'll need less sleep than me Sad

Y3 DD - in bed for 7.30, reads till about 8. Asleep by 8.30ish and up at 7.30am. Seems about right for her.

DD is in year 5. She is usually in bed by 9pm, and up at 7:30am. I'm not strict about bedtimes at the weekends, as she just sleeps in on weekend mornings if she needs to. She rarely seems tired.

I think what other people's kids do is irrelevant though. You know how much sleep your dc need. Why does your ex think they should stay up later. He may have a point, or he may not.

Maybe come at it from 'how much sleep do your children need?' rather than 'what time do they go to bed?'

Y1 12, 12, 10 (youngest is in Y1 now)
Y4 11, 11
Y6 10, 11
Y7 10, 10 (middle in Y7 now)
Y9 8 (oldest)

I am on about 6.
