Can someone explain these to me? Is there any formal testing or is it all just based on teacher assessment of their work through the year? Will we get the results as NC levels? Sublevels? (At parents' evening recently we were told what level she was working at but not a sub-level - is that normal?)

We haven't really had any information from the school about them, only in passing when they organised after school groups to help children with writing (for instance a group for children they thought could get a level 3 with a bit of extra support).

The official levels are the teacher assessments. The tests can be done at any time up in the school year until a certain date, and are used to inform the teacher assessment . You don't need to do anything or worry about it. My DD2 had no knowledge she was doing the tests. She was doing some 'special work in a booklet' on some days, and that was it.

I'm not sure about the levels/sublevels bit as NC levels are changing. No doubt Mrz will be along in a while to explain in more detail.

Levels are the same as in previous years for this year's Year 2 - all change next year.

Speaking and Listening and Science will be reported as a whole level (1, 2, , etc).

Maths, Writing and Reading are reported as a broad level at 1, 3 (or even 4), but at level 2 the reported grade would be sublevelled.

Ah, ok, fab. So if we were told at parents' evening last week that she was level 3, this is likely to be where she will end the year?

I would say definitely - level 3 is huge.
