A quick google brings up lots of sites but here is an example.

Do your teachers not provide you with explanations about things or invite you to parents' evening? Do you find your child's teacher approachable?

Impossible to say without understanding what your school means by those levels (there is no national standard any more).

if it's old NC levels, then leaving aside the fact that there is more/different stuff in the Y4 curriculum then they used to be, then they are basically the levels of a child who would be expected to get good Level 5 in Y6 in old money. so something like top 15% maybe?

if it's something else then no idea ...

4b was the "expected" level for end yr6. Levels have been eliminated now though, but some schools are still using them.

So good for year 4 but not staggering; depends on the cohort though. DDs year would have had a fair few on that; fewer in DSs year.

Based on what I've read on MN I think some schools are using a grading scheme where the "4" would be the child's year group and the a,b,c etc indicate whether they were emerging, secure, exceeding etc. OP - you really need to clarify how your school is using these levels!1

Depends on the progress of your child surely? Are you concerned they haven't moved forward? How were they doing at the end of year 3?

Thank you, we are told by school that dc is doing very well and that does seem to be the case, I was just wondering how unusual these levels would be nationally.

Those levels are good but not unusual.

On track for As and A*s at GCSEs.

But as PP said not genius levels.

As noted above, levels are above average.

My DD 7, has been assessed as 4c for maths and reading/comprehension. Was given year 6 past paper.
Doing well, but not a genius, not yet anyway.
School running old system while tweaking new grading system.

My dd has the same levels. Shes ahead but so are a few others in her year. My dd is what I would describe as 'normal bright '

If your school is still using the old NC levels, mine is very similar, but with a 5c for Maths. Top table in year group of 90 for everything in a high-performing cohort - one of three children at same maths level. So definitely the top end of ability but not racing ahead, genius level if you see what I mean. According to DD's teacher, the new curriculum is much more about broadening rather than racing through the levels, so for instance she has stayed at same maths level since autumn but they are doing much more in terms of challenging word problems.
