Reading and writing Levels

Hi,
The kids got their school reports last Friday and I was concerned when I saw DS' year 5 levels for reading and writing.

This is the first report he has had since starting year five and its vague to say the least.
However, it says level 5C for reading but only level 3A for writing.
Is this usual....to have three sub levels difference for reading and writing?

What's the best advice I can ask from his teacher at parents evening to bring his writing up? The targets on the sheet are quite in depth. I obviously understand them but he wouldn't!!

Forgot to say....parents evening slots are literally 5 mins per person so I don't have long to put forward my concerns.

It's normal for writing to lag behind reading but in your child's case there is more than a level.

I would ask the teacher exactly what he needs to do to improve his writing and how you and the school can help him to improve.

LOL My DS is 5a for reading and 3a for writing!! (Year 6). School have told me is it "unusual" but not unknown.

In DS's case actually a lot of his writing is at Level 4, but it is creative writing that lets him down - he just has a blind spot about it. Agree with mrz that it is worth finding out what the issue with his writing is - and you may well fine that some areas are better than others!
