For those in Reception class, how often are your reading books changed?

DS has been heard by an adult and had his book changed every day so far. He has gone from pink to yellow in six weeks.

hollie84 · 23/10/2014 20:52

Once a week.

Hillfog · 23/10/2014 20:53

As soon as they are read. We usually read daily so they are changed daily. The TA empties the book bag in the morning and chooses the new books for the kids.

Only1scoop · 23/10/2014 20:53

The home reader is changed weekly....

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 23/10/2014 20:57

Whenever the child wants to. We try and read most days with dd but Tues and Weds are difficult as we both work a full day then. And sometimes dd just doesn't fancy doing reading as she wants to bake / draw / write instead.. Sometimes dd likes to read the book just once, sometimes to each of us. Sometimes she wants to not read the school book but one of her own. (We have some Biff and Kippers.)

Anyway.... We have occasionally kept a book for over a week and on one (very impressive!) week we had 5 different books.

WhispersOfWickedness · 23/10/2014 20:57

It was every 1-2 days for the first few weeks, but then they started to be changed daily and I realised last week that it's because they have recently got some enthusiastic student teachers join them Grin

gamerchick · 23/10/2014 20:58

As soon as they're read.

elfycat · 23/10/2014 20:59

If I write in the communication book that we've read the book then it's changed most days. DD1 (Y1) reads in class with an adult twice a week and they change her book there and then if she reads it well.

There's also another, more difficult book that comes home for me to read. She can change it but doesn't. I think it's been travelling to and fro since June. I wan't to see who cracks first; me or the teacher.

In the meantime I'll continue with the books we have at home which are of similar, or slightly harder levels, which I read to her. Sometimes Julia Donaldson, sometimes Tolkien.

elfycat · 23/10/2014 21:00

Apologies for the random '

Kidsncats · 23/10/2014 21:07

I guess I should reply to my own question!
We get a book once a week, there's been nothing in the reading record book to say he's been heard...maybe they don't write it in...I should ask.

DS reads at home a lot as he enjoys it, but he also loves Biff/Chip books. I'd quite like him heard at some point as it's very different for him to read to someone other than me.

My ds gets heard twice a week. We seem to get two books every Monday at the minute - one of which is wordless and one of which is the first set of biff, chip and kipper. The exception to that rule was today where both books were changed, presumably because they broke up for half term today so we have fresh books to last us a week.

louisejxxx · 23/10/2014 21:26

Meant to say first set of biff, chip and kipper with words in.

Dragonlette · 23/10/2014 21:31

Dd2 seems to change her book twice a week. They're still wordless atm, which is a little frustrating, but she's exhausted anyway so I'm not sure she'd be up to reading proper words by the time she gets home from the cm. She seems to be heard by the teacher once or twice a week.

RiverTam · 23/10/2014 21:34

once a week. She has a proper reading scheme book (though it seems very random, don't think we've had 2 from the same scheme yet!) and one she chooses herself (which is, without fail, a book we either own or have had from the library). I'm a bit crap about doing the reading scheme ones with her but her teacher said yesterday she was getting on fine so I'm not bothered.

Bordersmummy · 23/10/2014 21:38

The kids change their books daily here as soon as they arrive in the morning. I have once asked that we keep the book longer as I felt DS could benefit from having a second read through, but he changed it anyway! Listened to twice a week I think, at least once by the teacher and the other time by a TA or parent helper.

MrsChocolateBrownie · 23/10/2014 21:46

At the moment once a week (beginning to read books).
May ask at parents evening about whether the frequency may change as they move onto the next levels, as even he's getting bored of them mid way through the week

StripyBanana · 23/10/2014 21:48

Once a week and even then optional. I don't think we should put pressure on reception kids to read daily to be honest.

3bunnies · 23/10/2014 22:33

Once a week here which seems about right for him. If we finish before the end of the week then he reads a library book or one of his picture books. One week I thought he wouldn't finish but he was so determined that he just sat down and finished the rest in one go.

Icapturethecastle · 24/10/2014 09:02

Books can be changed everyday in my DD's class's but they are only listened to once a week.

If your child is listened to everyday are they in small classes? In a class of 30 it must be difficult to listen to a child's everyday let alone 30 in a week.

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 24/10/2014 14:04

Book changed once a week and they don't hear them read the one they had at home. He's been heard reading a book less than once a week I'd say. I've been keeping his reading going with other books.

AdorabeezleWinterpop · 24/10/2014 19:35

If we are lucky, twice a week. They are too easy for her (stage 3 ORT) but I haven't said anything yet. As a teacher myself, I know how well asking to move up stages goes down! Maybe at parents' evening!

catkind · 25/10/2014 11:09

Ours was once a week to start with, but when we spoke to the teacher she was happy to change more often. So if you're not happy, ask!

The reception class I help out with change the books every day ,I go in to change the books a couple of days a week, the parents write in the children's reading record book whether they have read or not ,if they have I change if not those are the children I will get to read with me and then change their book.At our school many parents volunteer to hear children read and to change books.
