Guided reading advice please

I'm after some advice before talking to the class teacher so I don't upset anyone.

When my older children started school they did letters and sounds, learned their sounds then got reading books - they had about 5/6 books per week, were listened to individually by the teacher twice a week, progressed well and are great readers.

My youngest has just started. The school do read write inc and now only do guided reading twice a week, so no other readers are sent home therefore only 2 books a week. I love the way RWI works, youngest is doing brilliantly with writing and spelling and reading. But weirdly the reading progress feels too fast, they have moved up a band having only read 4/5 books of the previous band. It feels like a big jump and I'm worried they're not getting enough breadth of practice at each stage.

So the question is, should I ask for extra readers at the same level to be sent home each week in addition to the guided reader? Or does this cause a problem with this particular system of learning to read?

Thanks

On Amazon there is a parent's book to go with the RWI scheme and you can alos buy the story books (they are quite cheap as they are black and white coies of the originals). This way you can revisit the books at home as many times as you like. Or you could get some different phonics scheme books to add breadth to the RWI scheme. The book people have an offer on Julia Donaldson phonics books at the moment.
