Designer jacket for school- should I not?

Hi

I've been trying to find a good quality coat for DS 4, when he starts school for the winter period.

I've been up and down west end, trying to find a good quality coat.

So after looking in H&M, GAP, NEXT, MONSOON, ZARA etc. As a last resort I went into the House of Fraser, kids section and I saw the most perfect coat for him. The issues that I had with the coat, that it was a Timberland (designer coat) and it was £60.00. I didn't buy it in the end.

I'm not really keen on dressing my child in designer labels. Though he does have two pairs of nike trainers. DS dad brought him a tommy hilfiger jacket, which DS has had for 2 and a half years and still is in good condition but has outgrown it.

I loved his Tommy coat, especially the fact that the logo was very very small on his coat and wasn't noticeable at all. Though the Timberland coat's logo is a bit bigger and people will notice it. Though I did love the coat, especially as I am a picky shopper.

Should I get it or not? I don't want other people thinking that I'm rich or I'm dressing DS too fashionable for school.

It's probably a bit early in the season for the full range to come in, I'd hold fire for a bit. You could also keep an eye on the outdoor clothing brands as well. At the original price range you were looking at, Boden do good kids winter coats too. I honestly don't think people would particularly notice or judge a timberland coat, but you probably don't need to spend as much. Coats do get mislaid (4yos can be very scatty about their possessions!) from time to time as well.

If you can afford the coat, and like it, buy it.

Who on earth is going to be checking out the brand of coat your child is wearing, anyway?

Zara boys winter coats aren't far of £60 anyway.

I wouldn't spend that much on a coat for a 4 year old whatever brand it was. He will have grown out of it in a few months.

In what way can a coat be perfect for a child? Apart from warm and waterproof which you could get from Go Outdoors or somewhere?

To be honest I wouldn't bat an eyelid at Timberland jackets on children, they're probably very warm... You're overthinking I think. £60 for a good quality warm coat isn't too much IMO (I obviously realise others may disagree) so long as your DC is the kind of DC who would look after it and not lose it.

Another points to note it's very early to buy a winter coat... There'll be more choice if you hang fire until later.

I do agree though - wait a bit, the other stores may get their winter ranges through soon. Best coats in our primary years were from Debenhams!

This Gap one is £78 - over priced IMO, but no one is going to bat an eye lid and think you are loaded if you put it on your child.

The full range of winter costs isn't in the shops yet. Buy it if you like it, can afford it, meets uniform ECG, but be mindful that clothes tend to go walkabout at primary school.

I don't think Timberland is designer, I wouldn't take the blindest bit of notice of what brand a child's coat was anyway, would you?? If you can afford it get it, as others have said gap etc are around the same price

I wouldn't spend that much on a childs coat for school.
Some parents are thieving scroates and think nothing of taking a coat that they know does not belong to their child, and think nothing of taking out labels with names on. If you are prepared to have to replace it in a few months then go ahead.

No it's not a joke Hippo don't appreciate that snide comment, but anyway.

Yes, I guess I am over thinking it. There were a lot of Judgmental mums at DS nursery, especially to what the kids were wearing, so I guess my insecurities came off from that.

I was also worried, that it may go walkabouts.

I'm going to wait till the mid of september to see if any other coats come back.

Also bear in mind that your child's coat is likely to fall off their peg and get trodden on by dirty or wet shoes. Speaking as a teacher no one will take any notice of the brand of your child's coat.

Sparkling brook well DS is skinny and quite short for his age, he can still fit into 2-3 year old clothing. 4-5 clothing, no matter what shop I go into, tends to be too big on him. So when it comes to jackets, I always buy a size bigger.

Children have growth spurts. But really if you and your DS want the coat, buy it.

Just make sure the coat is waterproof, and warm and your DS can do the fastenings, and sew a name in it. But don't be upset if it comes home marked or muddy etc....

As the Mum of boy teens school winter coats are a thing of the past.

So long as you don't mind that said coat will get muddy, wet, trodden on, used as a cape, pulled, chewed, ground into the tarmac and generally abused or maybe just plain lost.

And for goodness sake label it VERY clearly with your childs name.

If you want a decent waterproof coat I'd buy from an outdoors store/camping store. Tresspass, go outdoors, blacks etc.

at 4 it really isnt about the brand. You want waterproof and warm withoit being stiffling hot.

When they start in sept they wont need a full winter coat either. If they have a school jumper thy just need a thin waterproof or they will be too warm.

I would raise my eyebrows at the lunacy of spending that much money on a 4 year old's coat which will get lost/ripped/covered in mud/dragged round the playground. The brand wouldn't bother me. I'd agree with others to hang fire at the minute - if the winter is like last one you won't need a full winter coat anyway, my DC managed very well with the water proof coats with fleece inside that you can get from somewhere like Go Outdoors for about £12 quid.

I'd be more judgy about the trainers - horrendous brand!

As for the coat, definitely relax but having put 4 dc through primary I'd definitely suggest looking at go outdoors or similar, simply because they are so frequently lost. Interestingly the coats that anyone can afford and are practical before pretty don't seem to walk quite as many times per term and usually turn up again
