Well, in IQ tests, things like mental arithmetic come under verbal IQ, not performance IQ... Verbal reasoning tests have always included things like working out codes, number patterns, etc - emphasis there being on the reasoning... and you can, after all, say numbers, so they aren't exactly non-verbal. grin

Um...is it just me or is this more like maths rather than anything to do with the use of language (or have I completely understood what verbal reasoning is supposed to be).

When doing this sort of question it's often a good idea to jot down the difference between the adjacent numbers as you will often be able to spot a pattern.

Or, for the first one, you could see it as three sequences put together, where you just add 9 each time (ie jump over two numbers each time to do it)...

Another cross post. I was just getting the children's tea out of the oven!

AvonleaAnne Fri 06-Jun-14 17:21:52

The second one is -1, +1, -1, +2, -1, +3, -1, +4 etc for the sequence.

cross posts the other way round now haplesshousewife - took me a moment to work out the second one because I couldn't add 3!!!

mumum224 Fri 06-Jun-14 17:19:11

Thank you also HaplessHousewife

-1 +1 -1 +2 -1 +3 -1 +4
so the pattern is always -1 and then the + number is increasing by 1 each time

HaplessHousewife Fri 06-Jun-14 17:18:52

Sorry cross post due to slow typing!

Q1) The pattern is +7, +8, -6 so
34 (+7=) 41 (+8=) 49 (-6=) 43 (+7=) 50 (+8=) 58 (-6=) 52 (+7=) 59 (+8=) 67

Q2) The pattern is -1, +1, -1, +2, -1, +3, -1, +4 so
18 (-1=) 17 (+1=) 18 (-1=) 17 (+2=) 19 (-1=) 18 (+3=) 21 (-1=) 20 (+4=) 24.

Hope that helps.

Thank you nonicknameseemsavailable smile

nonicknameseemsavailable Fri 06-Jun-14 17:15:04

the first one is +7 +8 -6 for the pattern

My DD is asking my ehlp to explain these and i have no idea with these 2 questions. Can anyone help pls?

In both of them one needs to find the number that continues the series in the most sensible way. My DD got them both wrong and although i have the correct answer i do not know why ?

Q1) 34 41 49 43 50 58 52 59 (?) Answer = 67
Q2) 18 17 18 17 19 18 21 20 (?) Answer = 24
