Feeling undermined by a line managers

Just was wondering how do you deal with a line manager who tells you to do one thing and when you do ask you to change it. Now in my line of work, I deal with people issues so if I advise them to do s.t. and then have to take it back it makes me look silly. Am I seeing into it too much? Must admit that at the moment I feel a little bit frustrated by this...
